I’m looking to get some photos printed at A3 or A2 and mounted on foam board: Are there any good places online worth looking at?

They are for personal home decoration 🙂

Metroprint – I’ve used them several times and they are excellent; lots of options for paper and sizing and they can mount them for you as well.

Cheers GT, I’ll check them out.

Wow! Not cheap, are they? ~ £40 for an A3 mounted on foam board 😯

Or is that the going rate these days?

Theyre only up the road from me but have used online service a few times.

I’ve not shopped around to be honest, I just used them and have been very happy with the quality and care taken.

But to be honest, since I got a decent printer, I don’t feel the need to use them anymore. I picked up a Canon Pro-10s new for about £325 and since then have just printed at home. The results are pretty spectacular.

If you want I’d be happy to make you a print or two on high quality A3 paper. You pay the postage costs and make a donation to charity for the material costs.

Good quality printers are eye-wateringly expensive. So good quality printing is expensive. And having just this very afternoon ordered a load of foam board to mount some of my latest expensive printouts, I can tell you that stuff ain’t cheap either.

Have you got any local reprographics firms? If you went and had a chat with them I bet they’d do it cheaper, or for the same cost as the online places, and you’ll be able to see the quality, without buggering about getting stuff of unknown providence posted

Trust me, that’s cheap. If you want high-end printing and mounting, it will cost a lot more. In fact i think I’ve paid more than that for a print alone, let alone mounting! As Binners says, high end printers can cost a fortune, so a business has to make a decent return to cover costs. Quality printing is worth it though, if you want a print to last and not be damaged quickly by UV light.

I remember high end B+W ‘wet’ printing costs. Astonishing. 😯

Thanks for the offer GT: I was hoping to have them mounted on foamex as well, but if that proves too expensive, I may take you up on that.

Thanks for the input all. I’ll have another shop around.

Might I interject at this juncture, to ask if anyone knows a good place for getting panoramas printed? I have one of a recent ski trip that I want go get printed and framed as a present for my sister, it’s roughly 5:1 ratio. Any suggestions much appreciated.

    Evening all,

I can do this. We have a pair of 1.6m wide inkjet’s they are CMYK so don’t have as wide a gamut as some of the specialist photo printers but it does make some good quality print.
We have 3mm & 5mm foamex and thicker, what thickness was the £40 quote on? 10mm?
    Email in profile.
As always, the main failing is in the quality of the photo…not the printer.

Not sure if the recommend was directed at me or the OP but, either way, Whitewall looks good for printing my pano – cheers. Can’t work out if getting it printed and framed by them will be more cost effective than trying to find someone local who would also frame it. Good site though. TheDTs – do you do similar pano type printing?

    Flatboy,

Pretty much. We dont print direct to the board like they do.
We print to self adhesive and apply that to whatever the customer wants.
Foamex, Composite sheet, vehicles or acrylic.
If we were doing acrylic we would reverse print on clear and back it up with white vinyl or composite. We often use stand off fixings which look nice in some settings.

Any local sign maker should be able to do this type of thing.
The only thing, Whitewall add in the frame on the back, which is a nice touch.
Their prices look very expensive though.

I got an acrylic done for a friend as a gift, it was £80. Make sure to shop around and get recommendations as you can pay a lot and get poor quality. You also need to ensure the image is high enough quality to be printed in that size. Many good photographers here who can help.

It’s as much about the viewing distance as it is about the quality of the image.
