Anyone taking this or have any experience.
A freind recently has had seizures and has been prescribed phenytoin 100mg 3 times a day.
Thing is he is constantly falling asleep and half asleep when he is awake.

He wants to stop this med as he is sick of the heavy sedation they cause, will this get better with time?

    Thanks.

The missus was on this for about 10 years. She needed a 2 or 3 hour kip every afternoon and was usually in bed by 9. No way to live, but better than the alternative.
Now solely on Epilim and no such side effects. I’m not sure Epilim is a direct replacement though. The cause of her seizures (tape worm eggs in the brain, picked up in Nicaragua) have been under control for the last 8 years.

It’s a bit old skool to be used as a long term anticonvulsant. As is obvious from your post it’s quite sedating, which can be useful in some circumstances.

Plenty of better options available these days, T’is worth getting to see a good neurologist or epileptologist for med review. What part if the country are you in?

    Thanks for your replies.
My freind had his first bout of seizures two months ago after a fall where he suffered a peg fracture.
The cause we were told was low calcium levels. He then suffered another bout last week of which we were told the cause was very low magnesium levels this time.
He has since been discharged with adcal and the phenytoin.

The sedation is an added liability with his yet to heal neck injury.

    He’s in watford.
