Can anyone recommend any software to back-up files from my laptop to my pc please? Both connect over a wireless network, and I've always done it manually - when I can be bothered - but I've got several gigs worth of photos of the nippers, and it takes ages, and I don't want to lose them if my laptop has a disaster.

Sync toy - nice and simple.
Do you want to do a single back up or have a piece of software monitor changes and push incremental files/changes across periodically?
If the latter Ive found Beyond Compare to be very good for synchronising drives.
I use something called "perfectbackup manager" its an online system that backs up to a GB free online.
A job runs daily updating changes.
Works for me.
