Frustrated with having to buy a tube of glue, levers, chalk etc when all I really want is a bunch of patches I eBayed a bulk pack of 48 patches from Singapore. They look a bit shonky though. Any experiences?

Is there any reason you can’t use the normal patch glue with a few bits of cut up inner tube? I’ve never tried it but would be interested to hear if anyone has…

Rema Tiptop patches, you can get a box of 100.

I have, it didn’t work from what I remember. I think that patches kind of adhere in a certain way once glued which inner tube doesn’t do. I could be talking bollocks there though!

I’ve bought some Rema Tip Top patches from Ebay. Seem to be genuine and spot on.

Not sure about going down the unbranded route here when it comes to cost saving vs potential hassle and worry.

Rema Tip Top are the Daddies for everything from a road bike to a tractor.

If you want to make your own patches from old tubes the trick is to clean one side with meths and coat the clean side with vulcanising solution and then protect with clingfilm until needed. these are fine for MTB but a bit chunky for road.

Just wasted some Layzene ones, worked initially then let go 🙁

3 sheets, approx 4″ x 2″, cut them to size when required. All you’ll ever need. They sell vulcanizing solution in mansize tubes too.

Topeak are the little square ones… they’re also very very good.

Even better is… they’re also very cheap at CRC

Pound land. You end up with a surplus of chalk etc. But the patches are cheap.

Rema Tip Top in boxes of 100.

Cut up bits of inner tube seem to do the job in the parts of Africa that I have seen. You just have to be very vigorous with the sandpaper on it.

Tried the Skabs Bike Tube Peel and Stick Patches from Halfords, worked initially but then started to let go especially if the tyre got hot in the sun – adhesive seemed to soften. So replaced with normal patches and glue which worked no problem.

I Have also used the Park Tool Super Patch Kit and these seem to work a treat.

Anyone tried the Superstar components self adhesive patches? Just saw them the other day

All the glued patches work fine if correctly applied…a dry roughed tube and left to air dry, then an uncontaminated patch applied.

Easy to do at home, but not always practical on the trail particularly in Wet Wales.

Found all the self-adhesive patches are a temporary fix only, if at all.

I will stay with 2 spare tubes and patches with glue for the 3rd emergency.

Packet looks like a condom one and the patches have mildly lewd cartoons on… I’ve yet to use one so no idea how well they stick…

weldtite do a sheet (about A6) that you can cut up. Handy for doing pinch flats. Works well. Bought about 5 sheets years ago when I realised I had 10’s of tubes of glue.

+1 for the Tip Top patches on road tubes….but all the vulcanised patches work satisfactorily.

Never tried a self-adhesive on a road tube…I could see it would probably not get me home.
