  • Painting a frame – iridescent paint?

    On the way home from BPW we were overtaken by a car with a purple paint job, that turned blue in certain lights. Almost like petrol. I loved it, and wondered if it’s possible to paint a bike that colour?

    Pretty sure you can, but it’s expensive paint.

    I think some Klein frames used to come in iridescent colours.

    I’ve no idea how it’s applied, but this is the stuff you mean;

    I’d have thought most car respray places should be able to do it?

    The downside is, car paint is nowhere enar as tough as powdercoat, so it’ll chip really easily and look tatty after a while.

    There’s a few old style Nissan Micras round here that have gold/green fade paint like that. Was it an option?

    You can get powdercoat that does colour flip. Can’t remember the name of the company now. Did find this though: http://www.electrostaticmagic.co.uk/collections/systems/products/powder-coating-system-1

    This place sells pigments for making your own paint up – including thermochromic paint 😀 http://www.paintwithpearl.com/chameleonstore.htm

    You can paint a frame any colour you can paint a car. You may find it will need a specific ground coat and that the base coat may be expensive though.

    Nissan used it on the Micra and Primera in the late ’90s, Alfa have used it on the 156, and TVR used it on various mental machines, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to track some down. Not sure you’ll get precisely the same effect on a bike frame though, don’t you get most of the effect in a transition from one panel to another, on a bike frame you’ve only got tight curves. Worth a try though. Post pictures when it’s done.

    My old dawes galaxy had a rather snazzy brown/green gold shimmer paint which was hard as nails.

    ive used this on a couple of models, it works well.
    the shells are transparent tho, not sure if it would work on a bike frame tbh.
    it needs a black background as the paint is semi transparent.
    you could do a test sample i suppose . .
