I've never been around the area before & tempted by the ST article I'm hoping to have a ride round the area on Saturday. So, anyone riding round there that does not mind a hanger on this Saturday morning? Or top tips on finding the good bits welcome. I've trawled the interweb & found the Crown Estate map + a few scribbled on "trails somewhere here" so hope to be able to find something worth riding. I don't expect the ferns & dry trails of the write up but never mind...

You will just need to look out for singletrack off the fire roads and explore. The maps are not helpful. If you have a gps then there are gpx files around.
Not sure of the conditions either, after last week's race and the rainy week so far it may be a mud fest.

Conditions arent that bad (speeking form last weekend),
Seagull run is always fine, tank traps was interesting in the ditch but rideable as long as you kept momentum up and off the brakes, stickler was apparently underwater in the usual places, labrynth was fine, jump gulley is trashed, rollercoaster is slippery (mind that last corner), axle run etc is rideable but muddy.
I'd offer to guide but I'm ill
I wouldn't advise going alone as you wont find much to ride other than fire roads and lots of short bits of singletrack that come to dead ends.GPS seems useless too, it never seemed to get an accurate fix for me so riding the same trail twice the map showed tracks 200m appart!

TINAS - when you're feeling better can i invite you along to a small ride at gentle place with a couple of friends and my lowly self.... you'd have to slow yourself down and might be frustrated by our pace.... but we'd make up for it in enthusiasm (i'll bring ear-plugs for mrs consequence as she hits the wall)
i can never find the singletrack with names... apart from babymaker and i think the seagull?
better yet we could make it a "STW gentle on the n00bs Swinley adventure" and invite some others

There's a pretty good looking map of the trails on openstreetmap. I've not tried to use it for navigation purposes, but it seemed to match up ok with a couple of gpx tracks I took using my phone.

I'm just back from a wee shuffle on the fire roads and a little singletrack. Yes, it's muddy and, yes, there's plenty of puddles. Didn't go over the far side though.
My big mistake was not to wear waterproof shorts. Oh and could have done with a wider mud tyre too.
There's some work being done near Upper Star Post but I guess that will not continue into the weekend.

I'm there with a bunch of mates tomorrow at 10.30 if your still interested?
We're average in terms of experience...I've been riding 15 years... the others are between 15 and 5 years (intermittent) and at least two of us haven't exactly kept our fittness up... we're all early 30's and happy to show you round if you want...
BTW - It WILL be muddy

Will be with a guy on a gary fisher sugar4, another chap on A white Genesis and a fella on a black cannondale...

That's the best, make that the only - offer I have that will give me some chance of avoiding blundering around. Assume you mean the "Lookout" car park? I was aiming to be there about 9:30, I'll do some blundering & get back to the CP to try & meet you guys. I'll be on a black Soul & driving a banana coloured Focus CMax.Cheers

Yep I'd be up for that, I'll probably be out and about next weekend, the missus who's had the same symptoms went to the docs and came back with a whole list of 'itis's* but I'm not feeling so bad now so hopefully I'm on the mend.
*a good lesson in not putting off going to the docs for two weeks, these things spread!
