Do you use some kind of costume thingy - like a wetsuit shortie or just those nappies? This will be our first time in a pool - baby is 12 weeks.

nappy thing only but the pool is warmer than a normal swimming pool they ar eboys have seen girl babies in cossies. Never to young to teach them gender roles

swim nappy with swimming shorts over. Some just seem to use the nappy alone.

Swim nappy + costume for our little one. Nappy only is a bit risky, I think. If they do a big poo there's always the chance of leakage which one more layer would cover up.

Jojo maman Bebe do good baby neoprene swim suits if your little one is on the small side and prone to getting cold quickly.

We have a cossie that has floats in it, but Lil Grips was almost 1 when we went. And we ditched it soon after, we just hold her now or she paddles.
Avoid the rubber rings - the baby gets nothing out of it, all they see is rubber.
Although tbh I'd not want to take a kid that small. Pools are often very loud and busy places, rather frightening and over-stimulating.
For the poo issue we've just used nappy swimming cossies. Is your baby BF? If so the poo's runny and will proably run otu everywhere

Ours is a bit skinny and we have a wee neoprene suit for her which stops her getting cold so quickly, we had a couple of "swims" that were less than 5 minutes.

We did the 'proper' baby swim classes at about 4 months old - brilliant for all of our confidences and I'd recommend at least one course of classes to any parent for water confidence. They were held in a theraputic pool so body temp water. They insist on a neoprene pair of swim pants over a swim nappy in case of leakage.
Remember - the little one won't be able to regulate his/her own body temperature - I think for most of the 1st year - so they will freeze in a normal pool. We got the neoprene wrap wetsuit things - always on EBay for not much - and they give you extra time in the water. We have graduated on to a suit with the floats in pockets around the torso and she loves it - we're almost surplus to a 14 month old in the water.

Just for balance, Lil Grips didn't go to the pool until she was probably 14 months, and is still completely confident. Confident that I'll not let her drown, since she can't actually swim. But she does float nicely with arm bands on.
Having said that, Cardiff pool is one of those ones with a 'beach' section that get deep really slowly so she could just paddle her way into it without any pressure from me.
