We live next door to a rented house. A number of blokes of moved in who may or may not be legally allowed to be here.

Anyway… There general attitude to cleanliness certainly leaves quite a bit to be desired. Over the last couple of months they seem to have deposited an increasing amount of nackered furniture, stacks of cardboard boxes, old mattresses etc out in the back yard. It looks a right state! Its their gaff though so they can do what they like

However, now the inevitable has happened and their drains have blocked up (probably with sodden cardboard). I've popped round and politely asked them if they can get it sorted. This was difficult as no-one could speak a word of english. The back yard is now full of stagnant water. And its starting to stink.

So what would you do? Do the environmental health deal with issues like this? I'm a bit reluctant to get the authorities involved as I suspect they might end up in a bit more trouble than just having blocked drains

Oh what a nightmare, I have had similar issues before with all night noise and its really hard to know what to do. I think all you can do is try to stay as reasonable and polite as possible, persuade them to get something done or sort it. Maybe even offer to assist as at least then you get some control. Last resort get council involved. The last thing you want is to start a feud as that won't help anything. But its so frustrating and infuriating. If the house is rented then you need to notify the landlord of whats going on was well, and see if you can get any other neighbours to back you up as then its not all on you. Good luck!

I understand why they're keeping a low profile. But i spent the weekend planting flowers with my daughters in the back garden and there was a nasty nif flouting over from next door

Is there any way you can find out who actually owns a property? Then I could contact them directly. I've politely asked them to sort it, but to be honest, I don't think they'd know where to start

Council is the best bet, but can take a while. Not surprisingly, the councils first response will be "not our problem". We had the same sort of issue with one of our neighbours and the council only got moving was when we (the other neighbours) clubbed together and payed for a solicitor. When the council realised we were serious stuff started to happen. End result is the neighbour has 1 year to clear up his mess, which isn't a great result but wouldn't have happened unless we forced the councils hand.

Hopefully your council will be better. From my experience (and my bestmates in Brigton). Talking to a Landlord will achieve nothing. He also badgered the council and they offered a Priest (yes!) as a mediation service. WTF.

My council (Croydon) was allover the tenant though like a rash.

    Slight Hijack
My elderly neighbor keeps throwing out food for the birds and recently that's attracted seagulls, so now she empties dinner plates on her front lawn for them.
I did point out the mess the Guls were making but she keeps doing it.
She keeps chucking food over the fence for my dog as well 👿

I reckon a call to environmental wouldn't be amiss if I talk to them nicely, waddaya reckon?

And what are the other 'joys' pray tell, hmmm? Stealing our jobs? Raping our women? Increase in crime? Bad cooking smells? Funny accents?

I have to say that the cooking smells coming from there are bloody fantastic! Perhaps I could do them a deal. I'll sort their drains if they cook my tea every night for a few weeks 😀

Don't take this wrong, but could you offer to help with the mess.
The only reason I say this is that my mum was next door to a house for what seemed to be imigrants in transit. And basically some of them had no idea about waste i.e they would cook outside and tip all the waste striaght down the drains.
In the end my mum got hold of the Landlord, and she ended up being a sort of tutor for want of a better word in how to use the facilities. She also got paid for looking after the garden.
Edit; a bit like that binners.

oldgit I was sat next to the river in Hebden Bridge at the weekend and 'marvelled' at the amount of people feeding the pigeons. I wonder if the local businesses have a rat and other infestion problem.

At the very least I bet your council could hit him with the vermin problem.

I doubt the landlord will care. Environmental health.

I'm a landlord and I would be keen to know if this had happened at one of my gaffs. I do monthly house inspections but it does not take long for tenants to go bad if they feel like it. Imagine the damage it could be causing to the property?
Most landlords want an easy life, and in my opinion getting rid of this type of hassle represents an easy life, ignoring it will lead to more pain and hassle.

I second the environmental health idea, I use them to back me when enforcing cleanliness. I have found that the housing part of your local council will back you up if you go to them with problem tenants whoa re peeing off the neighbours.

Oldgit – Have a quiet word with her, with regards to the seagulls etc. and explain that rats will be next, if she keeps it up.
With regards to your dog, that's totally out of order. Once she's on-side, get VERY stern… My brother's (D) neighbour used to do that with D's dogs (unknown to my brother!) until they them fed chicken bones. £700 and nearly 1 dog lighter, no food gets passed over the fence without express permission… Good luck, though…

toys19 not all landlords care like you though especially if they are renting through the DSS to council tenants. My bestmates neighbour was one of those. Any damage caused 'apparently' was picked up by the council and paid to the Landlord.

Little petrol on the mattresses and a box of swan vesta will clear the backyard in a reasonable time.

Call me racist but this does actually seem like an excellent reason to deny them residency in the UK…

Binners – i admire your attitude buddy. If the tennants seem a decent bunch then it might be worth chatting to them AGAIN and showing them how to sort the drains and mess. I think a lot of what you do from then on comes from how they act.

£4 to find out who owns the house.

Used to live next door to a rental and is was a right pain. However I found out who own the house and rung them direct complaining. All soon sorted (it helped I used to work with the guy).

It'll also be worth getting in contact with the leasing agents and lodging a complaint with them. they also may be able to tell you who the owner is.

Cheers for that Leku. I think contacting the landlord directly is definately the best approach. Who knows if they're even aware of the situation

Defo speak to your local council waste management team and environmental health and keep on at them (the council that is!)! Your slobs next door will soon get the message.
