There was a little "BANG" and then the strong smell of burning 😯

Something to do with the hifi so have unplugged it. Should I do anything else? Should I call the fire brigade?

There's a million and one wires so goodness only knows what's happened 🙄

Is it safe for me to go to bed?

On STW, a question like that from a lady has to be a troll…

unplug it all, get your lights out, turn the power off at the fuse box and go out for a ride.

    It'll be right 😉

    Birds ! 🙄

Switch it back on & poke about inside the back of the boxes with a screwdriver/unbent coathanger until you identify the problem

It may help if you drink lots of beer before commencing this process

Thank you all for your concern 🙂

Well, after a rather disturbed night's sleep, I have had a closer look but can't see any burnt wires. Problem is hifi consists of separate units, some of which are 25 years old. Chances are it's one of those that has exploded.

Will it be safe to plug in? I'm terrified the whole house will go up 😯

More words of wisdom very much appreciated!

Dont't stand on the top of hill in a thunderstorm wearing wet copper armor shouting "all the gods are b**tards"

Just plug it all in and see what doesn't work. It's unlikely to explode/ignite so quickly you won't have time to turn it off/run.

If it already blew up, you'd have to be really unlucky for it to burn your house down. You DO have an extinguisher I assume?

Should I have a fire extinguisher? I thought surge protected extension leads were a good buy though.

they only protect you from incoming surges, not equipment faults 🙁

sfb – but did it not stop it from blowing up the whole house?

OK, I will switch on hifi so should I warn the fire brigade first? The appearance of a fireman is rather appealing 😉

Chuck it out, 25 years old, is older than some riders on here.

Last night came home, the road blocked outside, converted house into flats opposite,on fire,3 fire engines, ambulance, paramedic car, police, and fire investigation vehicle, lots of smoke etc.

Dont let it be you,get an extinguisher, and a few smoke alarms.

I think you have been using Star Trek as a guide to electrical safety

Probably just a capacitor gone pop. Nice "burnt plastic and metal" smell.

It'll be buggered but may be repairable (by a shop) if you really want, though obviously it may not be worth it if it's 25 years old.

oddly voltages do not become obsolete…

The HiFi is 25 years old simon, the voltages may not be obsolete, but it is seems unlikely it is still "Hi" or "Fi" (unless it's a very nice one).

Of course, it could just be a fuse. Have you checked the fuses (in the plugs) cg?

Please do not put a 32 amp fuse in it if it's blown CG 😐

but surely CG's ears will have aged at the same speed? I bet it'll sound reet good through her ear trumpet…

yes, but components do simon… I've personally witnessed the switch on of over 100000 hifi products, and none were close to starting a serious fire.

CG, since it's already gone bang, the likelyhood is that the faulty component will prevent any further damage. I would isolate each bit of kit and turn on individually. If nothing starts smelling nasty (and it's likely to happen quickly) then you can start plugging things in and identify the dead unit by elimination. What boxes do you actually have? Would be happy to have a look if you want.

Right, I've just had to swig some vino to pluck up courage to turn on 😯

The gorgeous grungy Ryan Adams is playing and he sounds cool. So … that means either the cordless headphones, tape deck or vinyl player actually blew. Vinyl player is also 25 years old 😳

Rich – the amp, tuner, vinyl player are all made by Duel and fair play to them cos they have done really well for 25 years! CD player is around 4 years old and is Denon. Tape deck is Technics (rubbish) and speakers are B & W.

Good job I am selling a frame and forks, it may be needed to replace these antiques. Thanks for offer of help, may need your advice on suitable replacements!

Of course sfb has got it right with ears and ageing, everything is played l o u d 😉

Latest update – the bloodhound is on the trail and has decided it's the amp or cd player 🙁
