456 question for the masses

Want to run my 456 as a 1 x 9,

Using a standard shimano 3 ring crank, would I have clearance for a 38t on the front (middle position) ? might be a tight, but looks like room.

I could'nt fit a 40t bash on the outer position, so 38t ring on the middle sounds dubious.

I've got a 36t middle and 40t bash with no problems, huge clearance IIRC?

IIRC early ones had tighter clearance, some were modified with a hammer as well…………..

so a 38t and 40t bash.. does the chain ever hop off or do you use a c/device ?
