This bike was designed around Salsa’s Woodchipper offroad drop handlebar.

I always find that handlebars are the best starting point for designing a bike.

Christ designed around the bars and still needed that horrid stem

There are some special considerations that come into play when adding these bars to an existing bike, or when you are designing a bike for them. Because the drop portion of the bar is intended to be your main position, the bar needs to be higher overall than it would be on a road or cyclocross bike. There are two ways to accomplish this, either you get a tall stem, or you make the frame tall enough to set the bars high.

    No shit sherlock 😆

    That’s not niche.

    This is niche!:

    Guy who owns it can seriously ride it as well. I mean s e r i o u s l y Watched him nail a couple of 3m gap/step downs on it.

    Thats Aqua from mtbr.

He doesn’t post much these days preferring to ride apparently. Always had good pics.

Why does that guy have what looks like a bit of a circular saw as a bash guard?

Both cool..I can see how drop bars would make sense.

Have a look at some of the stuff he rides and you’ll see why.

Well I like drop bars off road but I’m sure if I was knocking something up from scratch for drop bars I’d go about it slighty different on the front end , but hey each to their own, and it will still ride good with normal bars as is 😉

It’s not that hard to understand.

Look at pictures and videos of Aquas and you’ll see the bashring being used for what it’s designed* for.

Why you’d want something sharp and pointy and spinning between your ankles rather then just a normal round bash guard?

Is for me lol. Unless he’s using it as some sort of weird method of propulsion, like a third wheel. But that sounds silly.

Nah. You should have gone to Keilder 100 last year. It felt like there were hundreds of the things.

    like a third wheel.

See even a young roady like you can work it out if you realy think about it. 🙄

Just have a look at some of his log/rock rides and you’ll see the third wheel in action. 😉

Sounds weird, never heard of that before, but still pretty cool. Now I’ve got to go to bed, I’ve got a chain gang ride in the morning. Although I’ve got an uplift day the day after…

It’s 11.30 on a friday night and you’re going to bed.

You should be out sh4gging and drinking and still be up in the morning. 😕

I hooked up with Aqua (steve) in January. He took me in a pretty awesome ride around Noble Canyon. His bike may not be all that niche but what he does on it certainly is. He’s easily one of the best riders I’ve ever seen and that’s before you get to the fact that he’s 55.
