  • Old roadie frame renovation – fixie or geared? Discs or calipers?

Hello, my first decent road bike frame is in a sorry state in storage and I’d like to lavish some TLC on it and bring it back into service. It’s a 531 job from the mid to late 80s.

The frame was damaged so the rear chainstay needs repairing anyways, and I had always assumed that I would just make the frame into a fixie, but now I’m wondering if that is the right thing to do?

I only have one working roadie at present which is a lovely carbon job, but it aint no good for winter training.

So I’m wondering if I should have the frame gently modernised and stick some Tiagra bits on it for winter riding? And should I go the whole hog and get discs?

    Decisions, decisions.

Please share your stories and pics of lovingly restored old frames.
