Threads about Vegas always seem to attract people keen to tell you how often they have been and how well they know the place, but how you shouldn’t go as it’s the worst place on earth.

Thinking about it, on our escape from Vegas on day 3, we did the usual Red Rock / Hoover Dam road trip but we went the wrong way…. We ended up here:

A pretty surreal experience. An absolutely massive hotel and casino complete with it’s own massive roller coaster. The place was deserted (no pun intended….) though. It’s like someone had a grand plan to move Vegas to this location starting with this hotel and it failed.

Another place not to go to is here:

Again, hardly anyone there and we had to sit through a ‘hilarious’ wild west type play / panto type thing. Just the four of us and a family with a load of kids. Too awkward to just walk out…. Much worse though was the grim petting zoo there. Ridiculous heat and a load of unsuitable animals caged up and pacing about in crappy conditions. Someone needs to remove the animals and burn the whole place down. Maybe also shoot anyone who works there just to keep with the theme of the place.

I have to go a few times a year for work. Not somewhere I’d choose to go to.

Contrary to many on here, we’ve visited Vegas a few times and enjoy it.
Yes, its very commercial and can if you’re not careful be very expensive.
But, we fly in, generally on a direct flight from the UK, spend a couple of days in a very nice hotel, rest, swim, find some good food, look but don’t buy from some very up market shops, watch people loose their money gambling but never never partake ourselves.
Once rested for 48 hrs we hire a car and clear off. Toured over the years California, Utah, Arizona etc etc. all of which are easily accessible from Vegas.
It depends what you want from the town, why go if you are not going to enjoy it?

You and the wife should get married there in 70’s outfits.

Thanks guys appreciate all the input we only live once so are looking forward to it either way! There’s loads of great ideas and will definitely try a few of your ideas and bear others in mind! Whilst getting drunk and overlooking the madness we will enjoy the break and all other shenanigans!

Seems to me from your post that what you want is a stop-gap hotel and all you do is use it as a layover. Hardly a ringing endorsement?

Don’t do what I did 10 years ago and went to Vegas for the weekend from Birmingham (or was it Manchester?). Great weekend but God, a long way to go for a weekend.

    Probably best not.
