Odd cloud formation – any ideas?

Spotted and photographed by a mate of mine last night near the M61 around Farnworth / Bolton.

It’s like something out of Quatermass….

Of course, he pulled over, turned off the ignition and applied the handbrake before taking this picture.

Ho Hum has provided the best explanation. I think it is a fallstreak cloud aka a holepunch cloud.
