Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) — A court in Lahore, Pakistan, has ordered that two men have their noses and ears chopped off, after the two were convicted of doing the same to a young woman.

The anti-terrorism court also ordered that brothers Ammanat Ali, 29, and Sher Mohammed, 27, spend life in prison and pay 700,000 rupees ($8,300) in compensation to the victim, Punjab province chief prosecutor Chaudary Mohammed Jahangir said Tuesday.

chewkw – it's clear that people will carry out crimes regardles sof the likely outcomes for them for two reasons;

1) they think they won't get caught

2) they are so emotional at the time they commit the crime they aren't thinking about consequences.

Every parent knows this is how children behave, even when they know they'll be punished and adults are the same.

The issue is whether the State has the right to inflict on its citizens acts that it says they are not allowed to commit to each other.

if punishments like that worked then there would be no crime. people still do bad stuff no matter what the consequences. Some US states have the death penalty for murder – guess what… people still murder others.

The problem is we did used to be severe but we realised it did not work and it often made things worse – might as well hang for a sheep as a lamb. If the punishment will be severe whatever the crime you might as well commit a severe crime in the first place …even criminals can do a risk / gain assessment.
What you suggest is vengeance and makes you and your society no better than the criminals you are objecting to.
If a crime is wrong it is surely wrong whether perpetrated by an individual or by the agents of the state.

Oh forgot to explain that it is an ancient Chinese execution where the guilty is chopped (near the pelvis or hips) into two pieces (upper and lower torsos) and ask to write a letter or apology while still alive or half dead. No letter of apology means either another family member would face the same punishment or slow death. The executioner usually use a giant/massive cleaver to do so in one swift chop while the judge looked on. They did not have the French guillotine by the way and perhaps not suitable for the job anyway. Giant cleaver will do. Not sure which dynasty this method of punishment was popular but it was very early in history BC I think.

The girl actually died so it was a bit more than GBH, anyway having seen someone get his hand crushed with a hammer blow in Tehran back in 2006 for robbing a bag of flour, it was a big mind you i am not altogether happy about lopping bits of folk and quite honestly although i am sick of the scum in the UK walking around after serving futile sentences for serious crimes i am not keen to see public beastings in the UK, i think it takes us back a few hundred years, do i have an answer, well lets make the turds serve the sentence, cut out the frills, give them 2500 calories a day but take away the luxuries that most of us work for, TVs, Phone calls, free education, gyms, take away liberty should mean just you exist and nothing else.

In these countries that is the way it is, should we argue against it ? if they came to our country and tried to install this type of law what would we say.? Sometimes you have to let them get on with it, apparently the sentence is fairly common however many are overturned and not carried out. Similar having visited a Pakistani prison while working for HMG some years ago you would not envisage a life sentence actually been that long once you are inside. Lots of severe canings are the norm in there and if you dont pay for food or have a family to support you from the outside you dont eat. All in all pretty harsh but life is hard in these countries anyway.

Lots and lots of the prison population have severe mental health issues, what do you think a regime like the one you describe will do to them? Make their condition worse or better?
