    and also [pedant] ‘tarmac’ isn’t a scots invention. MacAdam only invented the ‘mac’ bit that later was used in in tarmac, it was a welshman (Edgar Purnell Hooley) who patented binding a macadam surface with tar 80 years later (although a guy in monarch actually just beat him to it). The confusion stems from MacAdam’s nickname being ‘Tar MacAdam’ because aside from his road building he owned a tar factory in Muirkirk that made waterproofed ropes but he never used tar for his road building [/pedant]
