Hey all,
Need some new wheels for my Trek Fuel EX (2008). Bonty's on their last legs, bloody aluminium nipples!
Any recommendations for upgrade? Like the look of hoops, out else?
Weight is an issue but as long as it's under 1700g the pair it's fine. Not too wide because I've heard about the back end of my Trek being tight!! 
Replace nipples and rebuild? If new, what sort of budget?
Cannot think of anything better for the money other than hope on stans crest mine have been brilliant .
I've just got a set of Hope/Crest's and have been mighty pleased with them for the fews rides they've been on. They just seem to roll faster then my old Crossrides and are nice and light too, I've saved around 500g which is nice 
Hopes on something - default option. I run Pro2s on Mavic XM719s and they've been perfect for over 2 years - not needed touching. Not sure on their weight though and I've used them for more than just singletrack - they get ridden on roads now and again, some double track, bike park type stuff too so not sure if they're specific enough for just singletrack.
As people have already said, Hope Hoops are pretty much a no brainer - and if you're fairly quick, you can get 'em from Evans with 20% off (or see if your LBS will price match 'em). I've tried lots of other alternatives, Shimano, Mavic, American Classic, custom handbuilds yada yada, but the Hopes win out for the combination of quality, value, strength and reasonable weight - they're also just about the most adaptable as far as front axles go, so if you swap forks or bike, you're not stuck.
On various bikes, I'm running Hopes on DT 4.2, Stans 355's, Crests (in both 26" & 29") and until recently Flows. The Crests are a great XC/Trail rim and you'll end up with a sub 1700g wheelset. IMO, Flows are good if you're heavy-ish (95kg+) and/or regularly go off big drop offs or do a bit of light-moderate DH - otherwise they can be a bit overkill. FWIW, I ran a Hope Pro 2 & Crests wheelset on a 2010 Fuel EX and found they really suited it well - sure they took about 450-500g off weight.

I've got Crests in 29" and 355's in 26" on my bikes and to be fair they're awesome.
went a bit daft before christmas and put on a set of crossmax STs on my 2010 EX8.
but the are really good...
