  • New Bottom Bracket time?

I think the bottom bracket on the 2014 Stumpjumper FSR is in need of replacement. From what I’ve read the SRAM PF30 BB that is currently installed is toss and fails reguarly.

Would it be worth using one of the Praxis adapters like this? However, I’m usure whether the existing cranks would work? According to Specialised they are ‘Custom SRAM S-1250’.

    Anyone done something similar?

What makes you think it needs replacing?

Creaking and there’s a bit of play.

you adjusted the bearing pre-load? could just need a tweak.

Have a mate who has a Camber who keeps getting the same issue, each BB lasts a couple of rides, he’s getting them done under warranty at the moment but when it expires he’ll be getting one of those adapters and fitting a HTII unit. Will mean new cranks but worth it since the BB design is useless

Mines over 12 months old, but to be honest it’s not sounded great for awhile. I’ve heard similar things from others regarding the short life of their SRAM BBs.

I’ve Hope PF BB ready to fit to my bike, but annoyingly the current SRAM BB lasted better after I replaced the original bearings (originals lasted literally a few months), though I reckon it’s on it’s way out now. I went Hope as BB is servicable, I know I’ve said I replaced SRAM bearings, but the plastic cup was a bugger to get out previously and was starting to distort, so don’t expect to be able to reuse it again.

Ive had a Hope on mine for 6 months. It’s been brilliant.

one of the chaps i work with has the Praxis works BB in his Stumpy, been in there fault free for at least a year and he pounds the Cr&p out of it as hes a big guy.

great bit of kit that seems to be nearly fit and forget.

Well, just took the cranks off and removed the seals on the bottom bracket, I also popped the rubber seals off the bearings to see what state they were in. Mmmm more rust than grease! 😯

I’ve ridden mine about a dozen times and as far as I can remember never in the rain although on the last event it did get covered in heavy mud. When I tried to use it last week the BB was solid and I couldn’t turn the crank. So this weekend there will be a Hope going in as a replacement.
I can’t understand why they fail (I haven’t removed the original Sram item yet), are the seals that poor?

Or is water getting into the shell via the frame?

I’ve seen the sram one mentioned a few times as being very poor across different bikes, but don’t know what the underlying issue is.

Looked at the Hope one but there £80 by the looks of it and require the proper tool to fit. 😯

Hope can be found for £70 at the moment but the special tool could be an issue however I have a cunning plan….I’ll post on here after the weekend if it works.

Removed the old BB today and the shell was full of grit/water, it was packed up against the back of the bearings. Given that the Sram external seals look like an ok design I think the real issue is water ingress thru the internal cable runs. Drive side was seized solid.
The Hope replacement uses a screw in centre tube that should solve that issue.

The Hope special tool is £40 but I used the usual stud/washers to insert the cups and a 30mm across flats bolt to screw in the centre tube.
