I have the same problem. No end of times I go out to my shed and stand in cat faeces! If I see them in the garden then I have a low powered plastic bb gun that I use. Terrible shot though but frightens them off for a little while!

Catch it in the act and give it a soaking with a waterpistol/ old washing up bottle is probably the most humane way.

We even put sticks in the flower beds they still crap there! Only answer speed up when you see one crossing the road

You can buy pepper dust cheap for this purpose, and various other chemical deterrents, I've had variable results with these in the past. Alternatively, if you are around to see it doing it's dirty business a regular squirting with a Super Soaker will do the trick reasonably quickly.
A less practical but very effective way to remove all cat activity from your, (has to be secure) garden is to get a decent size male pet rabbit and let it roam the garden in the day.

We used to get next doors lowering their bowels en-route home. I found the water soaking worked a treat. You need to really drench it though.

Good point tthew. We've got two female rabbits that roam the garden all the time. They will attack a cat if it loiters too long.

They don't all do that. When ours is outside he comes back and crys to be let back inside to use the litter tray. But then he is a stupid cat, and about as far from the traditional feral hunter cat as possible.

we get one of the 'orrible vermin in our garden ripping open the bin bags. One day it's going to be concentrating so hard on the contents of the bin the dog is going to catch it!

Try all the cat repellent stuff from the garden centre or pet shop. I was told that a lemonade bottle half-filled with water also helps for some reason.
My cat doesn't go outside to do his business either, he comes back in to use a litter tray.

You need to "clean" the affected area. It's a grim job(bie) but you need to remove all the old sh!t.
Then slice some lemons and scatter them about, and add Colemans English Mustard powder to the area too.
Make sure you keep this topped up for about two weeks and they should start crapping somewhere else (creatures of habit).
OR - get a cat. They don't mess on their own turf and will stop other cats from doing so.

I've tried various cat repellents, but with no luck. I've never actually seen the kitties responsible, so super soaking isn't an option. I've been told that ea bags soaked in Olbas Oil is a good deterrent, but our neighbours look down on our garden enough as it is - I don't think littering the flour beds with tea bags will improve their opinion of us...
Next step, I'm trying cayenne pepper!

Ditto on the rabbit suggestion. If the rabbit is good at his job, he'll actually catch the cat and give it a good rogering. Ours got lucky on a number of occasions.

Find a thorney bush ours used to be a Berberis (of the family; nastyspikeybastardiie) use the clippings and spread them randomley around your flower bed.

rig up a security light which is also wired up to a low voltage electric fence. Place fence over area where cat does his/her dodo.
Wire everything to a timer, so you can still use the shed.
Flash and shock treatment!
Well that's what or neighbour did & he said it only took a week or so to stop the problem ;-).

our cat was getting bullied by the local Tom - i got it confused and trapped in a corner one day with a very long and accurate soaking from the pressure hose - hasnt been back since!

Spookily I logged on to post the same question.
New neighbours, who in themselves are very pleasant, have two of the vile creatures who have adopted the border by our garage door as their toilet.
Currently it's dropped back over their fence.
To those that suggest it's what cats do and we should accept it - no. I will not accept animal excrement being deposited in our back garden which my young son plays in.

I tend to let my dogs out of the house if i see a cat in our back garden. We never see the same cat twice in the back garden and its good sport for the dogs, although they wouldn't know what to do with a cat if they ever got near one.

i used to find it in my borders but put a lot of pepper down after cleaning it up and after a couple of days it stopped
