Something or things in a woodpecker hole halfway up a beautiful oak tree making a mechanical sound like a car engine trying to start only softer or the rhythmic sound of a train going over rails …. dat, dadada, dat, dadada dat?
Lively bees nest (didn’t see any flying around), baby woodpeckers (don’t know what sound these make), some kind of mustelid churring (just saw that on Spring Watch)? Any other ideas? I am pretty sure it is not baby Robins but I could be wrong.
Oh, and in mixed woodland on the Greensand Ridge down sarf.

I had a tit check a nest box once when I was in the garden. It must have tapped around the interior, presumably checking their was no rot. Twenty minutes or so of tapping, as you described, left it content to move in.

Maybe yours was something bigger than a baby robin.
