Most of you probably know this, but Jose Feliciano, best known for the Christmas song, ‘Feliz Navidad’, is a Puerto Rican guitarist who also happens to be blind.

In any case, I have always been a huge fan of Spanish and classical guitar, and I can think of no greater rendition of ‘Malaguena’ than this.

Never mention a musicians “disability” though. Playing a guitar without being able to see certainly makes him appear more impressive to a “casual” listener, infact he’d probably win Puerto Rico’s Got Talent, but it doesn’t actually make the music sound any better.

THe song was ok; didn’t really get into a good rhythm though. Most youtube guitar videos are a bit shit; they tend to focus on the speed of someone’s fingers, rather thant the tune itself.

That’s some beautiful guitar work. Audience clapping in the middle is annoying though. I’ll post a Clutch video as I believe they are a brilliant rock band and deserve to be heard by more people. I could post all day with underrated bands from different genres.

I know no one will believe me but I genuinely think there is a form of metal for everyone: I would love to sit someone down and educate them sometime. Not only is there superb musicianship, there’s passion, energy, melody (or not, if that’s what you prefer), intelligent lyrics, dumb lyrics (if that’s your bag), humour, classical influences, jazz influences, pop influences, electronica, female voices, orchestration etc etc etc.

(Obviously not in the same song, or band, except for Dillinger Escape Plan lol)

One of the most influential tunes I have heard, it really switched me on to the sub bass scene over a decade ago. Wasted unless you have have speakers (or headphones) that can handle the frequencies. It is such a sparse yet deep tune.

One of my top 3 bands (ok, probably my favourite) and I don’t think they get the credit deserved. As John Peel said, “The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the rock’n’roll era – you may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong”

And with their latest album, Going Going….., they’re bang on form. If you’ve never heard (of) them, give it a go. If you heard them ca 1989 and think all the songs sound the same, give them another chance. If you love them already – enjoy and see you at a gig sometime next year?

Took a bunch of mates to see Autechre, supported by, among others, Russell Haswell, who makes somewhat inaccessible electronic noise. After a bit of you tubing, most of my mates (most of whom are into rock music or fairly generic house) were convinced they were gonna have a really shit night listening to “the sound of a washing machine full of bricks”. Every last one of them bloody loved it. Proof that quality music made with intelligence and passion by talented people, if given the right exposure, will be appreciated by a surprising number of people.

I guess I’d be happier if more people has an appreciation of the more avant garde side of music (be that electronic, metal or classical) if only to never again have to hear the line “that’s not bloody music, that’s just noise, that is”.

I couldn’t post anything new, cos I don’t want more people to like the stuff I like (joke! 😀 ), but from a few years back, I couldn’t believe this band didn’t get anywhere. Saw them in half empty pubs a few times and the frontman was one of the most charismatic singers I’ve seen. Quirky, intelligent lyrics and great live. They lost a few members, went commercial and I think have now vanished. Shame. The album, Third Hand Prophecy is a great legacy.
