Personally I wouldn’t risk trying to take one on board in hand luggage. Are any of your mates taking checked luggage?

Security depends on so many things you don’t need the hassle, if your not taking a bike wherever you get one from might have hire kits.

I’m a convert, it’s so much easier just to check it in and have a bag with all your in flight crap

I usually do check in bags but I am going light as it’s only a couple of days and I’m hiring a bike out there. £36 for bags on a £79 return fare. They are bound to have some – no worries.

So a £115 fare? To be honest I don’t use airlines that don’t include bags these days… Hope your bag is in size and weight though as prices go up at the airport

You know those valve caps you can get in all interesting designs, ever had a family member take 2 as carry on that they bought while abroad? The ones shaped like minature grenades?…

I just carry it in my pocket as always, and it goes through the scanner in the tray with everything else.

Been looked at a couple of times, and lack of blade meant it passed. Other times it didn’t even raise a glance.

The Mrs left a (my!) park tool in her bag the other day. Straight through security at Edinburgh, confiscated at Charles de Gaulle 👿

Ouch! I feel your pain there. 🙁

Sort of expecting the follow up to these threads to include the loss of said multi tool that costs close to the luggage fee and then the checking the oversized hand luggage fee making the skimping on checked bags look silly, but as the OP has taken the advice then good luck 🙂

Just went and google4d that tool as had no idea what it looked like/ included.

Genuinely pretty shocked that would be allowed on a plane these days. I dont mean you could necessarily do much harm with it, but the perceived threat it would imply (from looking at it) would definitely have put me off taking it as carry on. Thats me though!

Had a snowboard tool taken off me. Can’t remember where, Geneva or Grenoble I think. Bakoda McIver Driver – about as lethal as my car key.

In nealglovers defence, he wasnt saying to the OP that its “all good” to take a multi onboard, rather just saying that so far he’s not had any problems.

That said, I wouldnt want to board a US flight with that as you mention. 😀

Not at all but I just don’t get taking anything sharp and pointy on a flight, the rules are surprisingly clear 🙂 as for shifters example that would be a screwdriver, banned by name.

As for logic in the system things like car keys get in there as the carnage after the liquid bombs stuff had nothing but paper etc. with you – tickets and passport and the number of people at the other end with lost luggage, no cash, no keys & no phone probably meant some common sense got applied. It saves the long conversation about how my car key is more dangerous than my screwdriver(A line that will probably keep you off the plane in some places) and it’s only short etc.

Absolutely agree. I just dont take anything onboard that even looks like it might be an issue. I stress about flights and stuff as it is without the extra worry. lol

EDIT: Oh, the family member taking 2 grenade shaped valve caps through security was a one off. I didnt even know they were bought.

lol I am, at least in the FF queue for security you get less of the “What do you mean this sharp pointy thing is not allowed in the cabin” and nobody weighs your hand luggage 😉

The favourite line of pointing out that they missed it/let it through last time really works a charm too.

I fly one level above freight. LOL Im not always even certain about that though.

My son and I were on a Dreamliner a year or so back and there was a constant drip of water coming from above the window aperture right onto the LCD screen in front of him. Condensation no doubt, but still. Pointed it out to the one of the staff and it was just dismissed as nothing. Looked at where the water was coming from (it poured out upon landing) and could see a load of paper serviettes rammed into the aperture above the window to try and absorb it! I mean 5 or 6cm in width of them! Must have been done by the crew on the plane itself as they werent just screwed up and shoved in, they were taken by the handful and wedged into the space quite neatly. lol

Actually took a pic of it to try and blag something from the airline but forgot about it.

Had my Crank Brothers multi tool in my backpack, got through customs in London and LA but got pulled up in Mexico about it and they wouldnt let me take it on board with me. Ended up throwing it in the bin which made me fairly angry! Not worth it!

Anyone search eBay for a seller called baa? Got loads of cheap multitool, nail flipper/files etc. Even saw some grenade shaped valve caps on there. 😆

Last time we flew out of Newcastle, the lovely security lady apologised and took them off me.

My cable ties were about 5cm long at most, but rules are rules, and you wouldn’t want me sticking twenty of them together and handcuffing someone with them.

I didn’t know that. I always have a few in my hand luggage to be used as an impromptu lock if it needs to get checked in. They mustn’t show up on the X-ray machine as they’ve never been taken off me.

I forgot to take my crank brothers tool out of my hand luggage recently. Got through Heathrow without being spotted, got picked up in Austria though. However, they just asked to see it and let me and tool through.

I’ve been flying with a leatherman micra – it’s got screwdriver ends on some of the bits, and a 4cm blade. Not had any problems. People have measured the blade a couple of times, but it’s below the 6cm limit.

If your multi tool has nothing on it more dangerous than a 5.5cm blade, I reckon you should be fine.

But I don’t make the rules. If I did, anything less dangerous than a broken bottle would be fine. Had a pear shaped carabiner taken off me at Lyon because it could be used as a knuckle duster. If you fancied it spinning round in your fist and smashing your knuckles to bits, yes, I guess it could.

yeah i carried one on my pocket (it has a little neoprene pouch too) and tossed it in the tray along with keys and phone etc. no problems.

The volcano a few years back got me stuck in spain. After a week of hotels then a 36hrs bus journey eventually got ourselves and the bikes to Heathrow as flights were turned back on. Was stopped at security with hand luggage that contained a leatherman skeletool and a crank bros multitool. Asked if I could go buy a padded envelope and send them home was met with a firm no. Although they escorted me through the airport to the secret hold luggage check in much to my pockets relief.

I missed a flight to Iceland because a friend had a mini adjustable spanner in his hand luggage.

You must have been pretty close to missing it anyway, busta? Not entirely the fault of the adjustable spanner, surely? 🙂

A mate used to work at Heathrow and a guy had his pedals confiscated. He put them in his hand luggage as his bike box was on the limit, so stashed weighty items in there. Being a cyclist too, my mate sadly had to chuck then away. But being an mtb’er he didn’t nick them as they were roady pedals…………..I don’t take nothing now, everything in the hold. Unlike some passengers, who believe their whole wardrobe is required during the flight of 2 hrs 🙄

My nail clippers had a nail file on. Rather than confiscate the clippers the security dude just snapped the nail file off and let me keep the clippers. I never used the file anyway 🙂

I had my Dog Bone Spanner taken off me at Gatwick this summer, no moving parts just a shaped piece of metal with holes in it.

use my pack as carry on luggage and it had a multi-tool slipped into a pocket on the shoulder strap, I’d completely forgotten it was there. Went through security at Manchester on the way out and Barcelona on the way home…

I packed my leatherman in luggage when going to France on the Eurostar.
No idea why as I know it’s not (or shouldn’t) be allowed – I just didn’t think.

Worst things was everyone asking what was I thinking when the security person found them after the scan.
I assume my reaction and embarrassment must have been extreme as they let me keep them just told me to not be so stupid again.
Managed to get them back from France without a problem !
