Possible family holiday location and looking to see if can match it with some good biking.

Not heard of anywhere in press or anything so any recommendations would be appreciated

No idea where to go yet as never been past dublin – and only then on a boozey weekender – so ideas on that too welcomed!

stay in bray or nearby, amazing riding both natural and man made in wicklow hills and only a 15miute ride on the DART (local train) to central dublin

something for everyone in the area, would move there tomorrow if a pint wasn’t a fiver

What type of riding do you enjoy?

Took the bike to Ireland last year. General impression that there’s not a huge amount of natural trails, everywhere seems to be fenced off and ‘private’. Lots of small country lanes but not many bridelways. It was also the most expensive country I’ve been to. Price of camping, food and beer was about 50% more than the UK. Found a couple of decent trail centres: Ballyhoura and others (found online) but a general lack of info on places to ride. Wouldn’t go back I’m afraid, not when scotland is so good. N.Ireland might be better though.

I also rode part of the Kerry Way, a 217 kilometre trail but mainly for walkers.

Steep rocky slopes (up) followed by boggy flat followed by some bridleway all interspersed with gates and stiles evey 500m or so which require lifting the bike over the locked gate and clambering over a 7 or 8 rung ladder in your SPD’s. It was hard work but the scenery is breathtaking

Loads of great stuff in the hills at the south of Dublin. If you are on your own, head for 3rock mountain/Ticknock carpark. Go up the hill, get lost, have fun. Ignore no cycling signs (this place is the heart of Dublin MTB). If you have time, try to hook up with http://www.epicmtb.com or http://www.madmtb.com.
(I’m from the area but living in UK last 15 years. I always bring the bike back when I’m visiting my mum though)
