There’s a few antipodeans on here, so hopefully someone can help. I have a chance to get some riding in whilst on a trip to Australia later this year.
1) Is Mt Stromlo worth the trip from Sydney? Or is there somewhere to ride in Sydney area
2) Can I get a rental bike anywhere near to the park?

Hi – I similarly am heading off to the Canberra/ Stromlo area in a few weeks to visit relatives so am interested to see any recommendations.

From what I gather there’s a fair bit of good riding all around Canberra and there’s more than enough to fill a couple of days

There is riding in and around Sydney – and also between Sydney and Canberra. I can’t vouch for the quality nor its suitability for visiting riders ie bike hire and ease of navigation.

Stromlo is good. It probably isn’t worth the 3+ hours each way trip just to ride there though. Also on a hot day there isn’t a lot of shade.

However as mentioned above there is lots and lots of other good riding around the ACT. Majura Pines are probably the next best and are well signposted. Bruce Ridge is a bit of fun, especially for city workers and if staying at the campsite literally in the trails. East Kowen/Sparrow Hill has around 100km of XC singletrack and some signposting. And there are others.

Depending on work and other commitments I might be able to give a guided tour of Majura, which are my doorstep trails. Likewise I can give you some pointers as to the best trails at Stromlo, not that any of them are bad.

If you have never been to Stromlo and have the chance I would go. You could spend all day there doing different routes and although you have to get to the top for every run the climbs are well constructed and very doable. The downs are superb.

As mentioned, Majura is good as is Sparrowhill on the outskirts.

It’s going to be hot though!!

Stromlo has the most UK style riding to do though can be hell in high winds or heat.

Up fromSydney you have Ourimba and another one that could be worth a look not been in a while. Also Thredbo is open for more gravity riding.

Make it further towards Melbourne and you have the Vic Alps

Never been to Stromlo but can confirm there is good riding in the Vic Alps. That trail the video Mike posted is a lot steeper and actually easier to see in reality (I suspect Mike rode it better than I did). Nearly killed me riding to the top on a day that was 36 degrees not long ago. But you can go from there all the way down the hill and along the river to the center of town on singletrack for a hard earned pint or three in the Brewery.

Ah yes…. I though you were missing some of the tight switchbacks just after one of the road crossings. 😉

yeah got them just a bit awkward, was a damm hot day in there too, missed the start and end of the easy way up but some great riding.
