Well Essex has some areas of riding that aren't bad - woodland singletrack near Chelmsford, Danbury is quite good. There's some races in nearby areas during the summer and a few decent bike shops around too that have club rides. It's all very tame compared to decent northern trails but it beats living in London! It's 45 mins to Liverpool St - can walk it to Faringdon from there.

SW London. There are some bargains to be had. Easy access to town, loads of open spaces, parks, the river etc. North Downs, Surrey Hills 30 mins drive away.

I can also recomend Surbiton.
I move down South around 13 years ago, first to Bristol (lovely) then to Kilburn (NW London - not so lovely) and finally been in Surbiton about 8 years. I use to cycle to work (near Oxford Circus)5 days a week, but after moving job and getting a kid that has stopped.
There's some okay door step riding (someone has even built a pump track in the woods) and the Surrey Hills/North Downs are only a few miles away (it is even possible to ride down to Dorking do a loop and ride back - good for the legs).
Getting places by car is easy as well - M3 and M4 can be got to without touching the M25.

Dare I say move to Shoreditch buy a fixie, get some sleeves, knuckle tats, skinny jeans, facial piercings and then wave goodbye to your mtb?

CYCLE IN!
perfarebly from the south west.
10-15 miles is possible as a cycle commute, and you'll save a fortune, get fit and it'll be far more pleasant than the train.

Got a 2 bedroom flat in S. London we're in the process of selling if you're interested. Fully set up for bike nuts - bike store, workshop etc.
30 minutes ride from the city, and easy train links to the (fab) Surrey Hills.

Guildford/woking area isn't bad and you'll have easy access to the north downs/surrey hilld in spare time.
personally I don't mind london - spend about half my week there, but wouldn't leave brighton unless I got a monster wage increase.

St Albans is pretty good for commuting from that way (fast frequent trains, some direct to Farringdon in about 25 mins) - not that cheap though. Can head straight out to countryside but probably better for road than MTB rides. If you must commute, try to avoid any train/tube interchange - more points of failure, more time spent, more misery.
Generally, I agree with TheBrick's post though. Better to have an hour's drive to good riding on the weekend than spend an hour an each way on a packed commuter train every single working day. If you cycle commute, there are quite a few nice, central areas that are good value because they're not within 15 mins walk of a tube station.
This generally applies more if you're young, free and single though. If you have kids, you inevitably want more space for your money and once they hit 5 then factors like local schools become more important.

Mascy
What is Westcott like, then? Ive heard conflicting reports from people, some of whom say it is fantastic and others that say that there's no community spirit to speak of and too far removed from Dorking to be convenient.
