I'd like a cabin. I'm reading cabin porn and I'd like to get one for myself.
I'm in a pretty good financial/personal situation. Have a decent job, so can get a mortgage if required. Already own my flat in central Edinburgh outright so looking for some kind of long weekend getaway (work Tues-Thurs). Just for chilling/disconnecting/naked frolicking/oh yeah, mountain biking. Maybe somewhere down Peebles-way as it doesn't take too long to get to from town.
But what's the procedure? Buy some land... build a cabin? I'm ...ok.... with DIY but don't really have the infrastructure in place for a big project. Tiny wee MX5 car, no storage (I live in a tenement)
Buy something pre-existing? But where do you look for stuff liek that - are backwoods cabins on Zoopla?
Buy a plot of land and a timber kit?
I can get a mortgage, so money isn't a massive issue. A £50k mortgage is easily affordable.
I guess if it's nice enough I can rent it out on AirBnB, though then you have cleaners/changeover management. Surely folk offer that though. If I made enough to cover the mortgage I'd be happy

If it's really a cabin you won't get a mortgage on it anyway.
Find a landowner who has some woods he's not attended to for half a century, offer to clear some of it up in return for access to build some tree nugget or other.
Get it in writing though, I hear Scottish Landlords are right tight demanding ex Lords gentry ensconced in thier own enclave of Sword wielding maniacs, in skirts.
Can't help but I'd love to do this too. Me and wifey have spoke about it and once the mortagage is paid off....
Have you saw Small House Bliss also, on Facebook.

Thanks!
It was a newspaper article about the changes in planning rules for huts that got me thinking
I'll build you one...
Put it where you like then (though you may need a little more than a MX5 to tow it!)
^ shepherds hut seems a good idea. And I just remembered a couple of guys from school i know are in the farm/estate management game down borders way si might get a wee corner to put it in free or cheap
I know of a nice, well kept piece of land next to some great trails. I've seen some strangely dressed folk hitting small white balls about on it. I don't think they'd bother you much though. You should look into it.
Shepherd's huts are cool, fairly easy to move from one location to another if necessary, and will last for a very long time if properly put together.
A friend of mine has two, both original ones, if I recall correctly, one has the date carved into the underside that's in the late 1800's, which she rents out as overflow accommodation at her hotel, the other is used by temporary staff if she gets really busy and has to use the staff accommodation in the main house.
Those who go for the hut in the garden absolutely love staying there, so there shouldn't be any issues having one as a weekend retreat on a patch of land somewhere.
Buy a forest 🙂 http://www.johnclegg.co.uk/uk-&-ireland-property-search/?filter_keywords=&filter_region=1%2F0%2F0&filter_price=all&submitbut=Search
Bookmarking this for later, very interesting

He wouldn't be securing a mortgage on the cabin, he'd be securing it on the place he already owns outright.

Well, that's me lost in a world of dream this evening, thanks.

A shepherd's hut and a £5k plot of land is just a bank loan really. Even better if I go in halvseys with my carpenter mate
