A friend has offered me and the other half a free stay in their luxury ski chalet. I have no interest in skiing and wouldn’t be staying in season anyway as that’s when they make their €€€€ but fancy a bit of walking sometime in September.
Is it likely to be miserable weather wise? Don’t mind a bit of cold but I guess torrential rain for days on end will mean sticking to boozing and the hot tub. Would love to take a bike but it’s supposed to be me and the other half having 4-5 days away. Any recommendations of spots to walk to or good restaurants. It looks like Roc D’enfer is a good small hill to walk to/up. I guess a lot of stuff will be closed? So no lifts to start a walk higher up.

I do a lot of walking out here. More than mtb really.

Im looking onto the roc d’Enfer right now. In the dark mind.

It’s not a small hill. Its one of the last 2000+ peaks that I haven’t yet got to the summit of as I need to a buddy for the last 500′. I’ve got up to la gollette in the Ridge to the summit and that involved some hairy moves on the descent of the scree gully. Although having made les hautes forts at 2466 last week I may have a crack solo in a couple of weeks.

However from cote d’abroz a walk taking in the col de la basse, les Paquis and les bois noirs is good.

There and back to col ratti also.

A loop over ratti, through chaux de vie and through graydon is fantastic but a big day walk coming back up through plan de criou. Lovely mountain restaurant at Graydon. Worth a trip on its own.

Tour of mont chery doable from your door.

If you get a chance to dine in morzine then the la chamade restaurant is highly rated, esp the cave des fromages

The matafan is good too if it’s open inter season.

With no lifts open, but assuming you have a car, a walk up the point du nyon is good, or from col du joux plan take in the pointe d’angolon.

Both 2000m peaks with about 600m of climbing.

Inter season is tricky. I often come out in September once the kids are back at school and do a few days walking but accept that a lot of businesses take a break then before the winter season.

If bar exclusif is open then check it out at col d’Encrenaz

    STW delivers the goods. 🙂
Some good local info there, sounds like there are some good loops to do more or less from the door.
I like the sound of the restaurant.
    Is it this place? https://fr-fr.facebook.com/RocdEnferBuvette/
We don’t have a car but our hosts will probably drop us of or collect us if needed.
I seem to have developed vertigo in later life so if it’s a scramble up the final bit of the Roc I’ll probably give that a miss! 😳

That’s the place. Make sure to eat her house beignet des pommes du terre.

If you don’t have transport you’ll probably be tied to cote d’abbroz for dining and I’ve not eaten there although have had a good coffee and beer in a bar with a large glass frontage.

The petit auberge in essert Rommand is at the bottom of the hill and is good too.

PM me nearer the time as I may well be out myself with a hire car.

This might work, but here is the roc.

Cote d’abbroz is the village in the bottom left hand corner. The buvette is the white dot right in the middle at the end if the middle Ridge

And this is the view down looking at the back of the restaurant from the col ratti

Your info should have us sorted for a few days, our hosts have been there a year so they should know the good places to eat too.(will be taking them to somewhere with an extensive wine list for a blow-out 8) in morzine)
The aerial satellite maps seem to flatten things, your pics show the true scale, it looks better than I imagined.
Have bookmarked this thread, thanks again for the suggestions.

OP my assumption would be that none of the “mountain” restaurants will be open and a fair few places in the town will be closed as its between seasons. Also you won’t get any lift assistance but plenty of spots you can drive up to and dona circular walk. That being said September and October are wonderful with autumn colours and you have a decent chance of some fine weather. The Chamonix summer lift system remains open till late Sep and some lifts later than that if you fancy a day trip and some high level walking or a trip up to Agile du Midi. About an hours drive.

Also Ambrose posted on another thread an easy looking circular walk of Fond de la Combe near Sixt which is a short drive, surrounded by peaks and cliffs.

Annecy is an hour away if weather poor and has pretty town centre with canals which won’t be rammed with tourists as it is in high season

The buvette closes on the 20th sept (from my very limited French) so I may see if we can go on the 18th 🙂
Happy to take a packed lunch but it’s nice to walk into somewhere doing a coffee and local food.
The Agile du Midi might be an idea for a day trip if the weather is good.

MrSmith this thread gave me urges for beignets 🙂

Stoner Jr and I did a climb up la grande terche today and back round in time for lunch at the buvette. Beautiful spot to sit in the silence and sun and savour the views.

I can’t seem to upload to imgur at the moment so will have to settle on links.

That’s the one at the bottom of my first post.
Has stunning views over the back of roc d’Enfer and very secluded.
It’s on the way up the col de la basse / col ratti climb.
Can only walk there, not drive, from the top of col d’Encrenaz.
