Tipping really is a shit system isn’t it. Here’s a couple of quid for doing a decent job – you wouldn’t give someone in Tesco a quid for scanning stuff, nor slip a fiver under the door to the cockpit to thank the pilot for not **** up and killing you, but social convention says you should tip restaurant staff because it’s “how it works” and makes a poorly paid job a better paid one.
Worst tipping experience of my life? 8 of us eating in a steak place in Whistler Village, in fairness we arrived quite late and they “managed to find us a table” on a Tuesday night when it was only a 3rd full, food was great, waiter a bit full of himself but we gave a very good tip – $80 from memory – when was the last time someone gave you £40 for finding them a seat and writing down what they want for tea? He was fairly disgusted though, because we were heading home in the morning we were trying to get rid of change – so it was in a pile of $2 coins, he pretty much marched us out – my only regret was I was a bit pissed, thought he was joking and didn’t take it back. We walked straight out of their into a bar where the server or whatever they’re called calls us all pussys for only drinking beer and not buying trays of shooters and paying her $20 for carrying them 10 metres from the bar.
