Hi.

Having a few issues with the rear hub of my Crossmax SX (only bought in July).

Side to side play (although read this is normal)
Squeaking coming from within the hub
Pedals still spin for a few seconds after i stop spinning.

Fancy learning how to service them myself so wondering are there any guides out there or is it a bike shop jobby.

If I can do it, what bearing sets/tools will I need.

Help much appreciated.

What model year are the SX’s?

If new, perhaps a warranty job, if older, they are mostly straightforward to work on

Side to side play while common is purely a result of the preload collar (4 small holes in outer plate on the hub) not applying enough pressure. Thats easily nipped up by using a pin spanner or the tool which came with them. Don’t over tighten though as that’s worse than slightly too loose.

The squeaking sounds dry, I’d be taking apart to have a look as they are simple to work on. As mentioned though if only 6 months old I’d be back to shop and let them sort it out.

They are the 2014 model.

I bought them online from Allterrain Cycles from would have to return them by post. Would they then forward them to mavic?

Just don’t want to be without the wheel for ages. Might have a look inside the hub.

I had the same issues, my preload was a bit loose, I took the freehub off, gave it a clean and re-grease. Then I put the freehub back on and tightened the preload, then backed it off a bit. Never had an issue with it since.

I don’t think you are meant to use grease but a light mineral oil for freehub pawls, repacking bearings with grease OK

What bout the sticking/pedals still spinning a bit? This free hub too?

That can be the freehub being a bit sticky.

Cool. So clean/re-grease may sort it. Just hope the squeaking ain’t a bearing.

Can anyone recommend a grease to use or is just normal finish line etc ok.

But as stated above, use light mineral oil for freehub pawls rather than grease.

Mineral oil as in brake mineral oil? That’s all I can find

Yep. I raised the same eyebrow, but that’s what I was told to use.

Shimano oil will work but is apparently thinner (2.5wt) than the Mavic own brand oil (10wt?). I have used brake oil but apparently may need to lube more often. Others have suggested high quality hair clipper oil or even Mobil 1 car oil
