2011 13″ MBP with 16Gb RAM, running 10.11.3; boots up reasonably quickly to the login screen but then takes aaaaaaages to get to the point I can actually do anything, with copious SBOD.

Have tried repairing permissions; anyone any other suggestions?

Do you know anyone with TechToolPro or Disk Warrior? TTP will check everything for you and tells you of hardware problems. DW repairs directories and reduces branches on the directory. Plus have a scan with Avast to see if you picked up something nasty.
