2011 MBP 13″, running 10.9. Was fine this morning.

Now won’t boot; screen lights up and chime plays, but then screen blacks and nothing else happens. Any suggestions? Have tried a PRAM reset to no avail.

Can you connect an external monitor/HDTV and get any picture?

Can you boot into recovery mode? This will allow you to run diagnostics.

To start your computer from Recovery, restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R). Press and hold these keys until the Apple logo appears. This indicates that your Mac is starting up. After the Recovery System finishes starting up, you should see a desktop with an OS X menu bar and a “Mac OS X Utilities” window. Note: If you see a login window or your own desktop and icons, it’s possible that you didn’t hold Command-R early enough. Restart and try again.

Sounds like your hard drive has gone.

Not too expensive to get fixed by Mac independent repairer.

Where are you based? I might be able to recommend someone?

I hope you were backed up………..

Wouldn’t boot into recovery mode; now has and it turns out the permissions were horribly corrupt.

In terms of backup, Time Machine is a Good Thing…
