hi, I'm looking for a special hotel in the Lakes for June, preferably in one of the major lakeside towns (e.g. Windermere)
needs to have modern decor, not one of those ones with a good reputation but is now looking a bit shabby, a good restaurant is a plus, or good restaurants/ pubs nearby
find it really hard to gauge opinion from internet reviews and I'm cynical about the validity of magazine and books reviews
so... I'm asking on a cycling forum 
any recommendations?

another option is a self-catering cottage/ house - again with a modern feel and near good places to eat
Sharrow Bay is fantastic - the original country house hotel. About 10 years since we stayed there, but still has a good reputation
But is obscenely expensive....

I would second the Waterhead if it's modern decor you want. They spent a few milion a couple of years ago refurbishing it.
It's on the outskirts of Ambleside...well at Waterhead, to be exact!! 8)Just over the road from the Lake.
I tried to book here: http://www.rothaymanor.co.uk/ for a romantic weekend away last summer but it was fully booked and we ended up in a (still very nice) place in Windermere. IME Windermere is just a bit too touristy though and the restuarants seem to get away with serving distinctly average food. Ambleside is much better for eating out.

That's the Wateredge Clare. It's right on the lake and was flooded out.

Good food there actually but they've not had much luck recently, that's the second time in less than three years it's needed a complete refurb following flooding.
(mobile phone camera + bad weather = rubbish pic, sorry!)

bakes...it's all fine now. A few hotels with lake frontage have had to close(as above), but water levels are back to normal.

have a look at the angel inn, in bowness. not seen a room, but the bar and restaurant are really nice, and good food and beer.
I believe the Samling is the top-drawer choice, celebrity guests etc, but hideously expensive. For a different approach, gastro-pub with rooms at the Drunken Duck, Hawkshead- well though of.
We got married at the Rampsbeck Hotel by Ullswater. Such an awesome place we've vowed to go back for our first anniversary
forgot about the drunken duck, if you aren't staying there then definitely go for dinner, its great

OK it's not in a town, but when I was looking around for something nice a while back I came across this, which has the side benefit of being handy for Whinlatter and riding nr Keswick.
