Why do so many lorries have either a broom or a long handled brush stashed somewhere about the trailer? What's it for?

At a guess it could be used for sweeping out the trailer or sweeping up a spillage.

Sweeping off the load bed rather than stuff flying off when moving – which would be a bit dangerous and leave the driver liable.

It's for cleaning the body out. Especially if you're switching from carring sand and gravel to, say, grain, you need to stop contamination.

Essential for tippers so as not to contaminate a load of sand with the dregs of the last load of topsoil, for example.
Also useful on curtainsiders for sweeping out all the bits of packaging, spilled loads and broken pallet that accumulate in the trailer.

This will surely enter the STW lexicon, and join such exalted companions as "pwned with Bombers", "wee in her shoes", "ur biek is Sarcin" and "xc jeyboy".
