A bit hit and miss at times over his career, but Ragged Glory is just magnificent.

Saw him in Italy last Summer. There was absolutely no communication with the crowd, he didn’t even introduce songs. No stage presence, songs played even slower than the originals which takes some doing. We were among the many that left early.

“and I hope Neil Young will remember, a southern man don’t need him round anyhow” kept going through my head.

love him – restless, always challenging and changing
Saw him in 1981 or so, Earls Court — shame I haven’t seen again since.

    obviously c_g is a fan 🙂 🙂

While he’s certainly had his, shall we say contrary moments, he’s never been as much of a cock as Dylan has when it comes to not giving what the audience expects.
Having said that, albums like ‘Arc Weld’ have pushed his fan’s buttons, if not its patience!

Have a listen to this version of Southern Man, accompanied by Graham Nash, David Crosby and Stephen Stills. In fact the 2nd disc of this live album has some pretty amazing guitar playing:

Tried to like him and failed.
But I do like this footage from 1971 of him being a dick after finding a bootleg album in a Los Angeles record shop. Great 70s vibe with record store clerk standing his ground against rich whiny voiced superstar.

I don’t intend to admit how far down this thread I’d got before I realised I’d got Neil Diamond mixed up with Neil Young.

Love On The Beach, Harvest, Tonight’s the Night and After The Goldrush. Nothing else has ever really gelled with me though. Saying that, those for albums alone are better than the career output of some other artists and acts.

    Ruined Crosby, Stills and Nash.

But was a real influence outside of CSYN.

Wasn’t afraid to experiment with different styles, credit to him for that.

Made some great albums, you have to respect him for not just turning out the same stuff year after year.

@greentricky. Like a Hurricane is one of my favourites also. One of the greatest guitar solos ever. I didn’t agree with the late John Peel about much but he did think Neil Young’s guitar playing was under appreciated. Its like he is strangling the thing trying to get out the sound he knows is in there.

Probably Keep on Rocking in The Free World is my favourite followed by Southern Man, Like a Hurricane, Harvest Moon and Only Love Can Break Your Heart
