I went into a bike shop yesterday afternoon – quite small shop front with workshop at the back and showroom downstairs. As I walk in there is a brand new Santa Cruz Tallboy C just stood up next to the counter. No sign of the guy who runs the shop for at least 2 minutes – would have been very easy to just walk out with it. Then i noticed a service label attached to the handle bars – it had a description of the work that he had done on it, followed by the customers (owners) full name and address.
This was in Tameside, so not some leafy suburb where a late delivery makes headline news. I commented on how nice the bike was but he didn’t seem to share my enthusiasm – suggesting anyhting other than a road bike isn’t worth bothering with – not sure the owner would have been too impressed.
Got me thinking though – if the bike did get stolen in those circumstances, who would cover the costs.
