  • Knee pain help please

    I have been getting intermittent pain in my knee for the last week or so. It has been more of an ache than anything and I had been pretty much ignoring it hoping it would go away. Yesterday it got significantly worse although I was not aware of doing anything that might have caused it either initially or yesterday to make it worse. It occurs when I am walking. I haven’t tried on the bike to see if it makes it worse. It is not every step just the odd one and is pretty sore when it comes. It is a sharp pain on the inside of my right knee towards the rear. I have been taking brufen and icing it and resting as much as possible, including working from home today but I was really looking forward to spending some quality time on the bike over the New Year holiday. Any advice for how to handle it or what I might have done?

    Er, Go see your GP.

    Sounds to me like you’ve worn it out or something, but your GP is much more likely to give you a better answer than anyone on here!

    do you stretch? a lot of knee pain i hear about (friends etc) is lack of stretching.

    The earliest I will be able to see my GP is 14 January. My leg might have dropped off by then!

    I don’t stretch often enough probably but I haven’t been doing any exercise either, just working and overeating.

    Get a massage and/or see physio privately. GP will give pain killers and say stop riding!

    Good idea, I might try to pop in to see a private physio specialising in sport injuries. In my experience they are less likely to say painkillers and rest than the GP.

    I’m in a similar boat. Sounds like tendonitus to me.

    Sadly, it really is a case of rest until it goes away. I’ve been off the bike for 2 weeks and look like an American now. I’m also doing lots of stretching and quad strengthening exercises to try and help.

    Excellent article. Many thanks for that. I’ll continue with the rest etc. and see when I might be able to get a physio appointment if I don’t feel any improvement.

    I hope you get back on the bike soon.

    Hate to stir things up but cold therapy, anti inflammatories and painkillers with nothing but rest until you see a specialist.. of which im one (podiatry, lower limb specialist). Years of riding, and too many knee injuires to list, and not even i would advise anything other that rest for what is probably the most unstable joint in the body. Not only that but cyclists are only strong in a straight line, being very prone to twisting/shearing injuries to the knee. Rest up now for a week or two, it could stop you being of your bike for months if you continue to stress an existing injury.

    It does sound like tendonitus or some meniscus damage. Impossible to determine without getting a proper consultation with an orthopod. Keep to minimum weight bearing and kneeling etc. If uncomfortable keep taking the anti inflammatory pain relief until you see a doc and if really concerned go to A&E. And try and not sit with your legs crossed.

    Knees oh dear………..I came off twice on the same sheet of black ice on the same (R) knee in early Dec, which is the same knee I injured in rugby many years ago. A little inflamed and painful for a few days, and perhaps not quite back to normal now, but I have continued stretching and trying to do at least a couple of miles of riding every night (and being more careful about braking on ice!) and it’s as good as it’ll ever be for a 59 year old. So – while rest and anti-inflamatories might be good at the acute stage, stretching exercises and a regular pattern of riding are best in the longer term………..or perhaps I stand to be corrected by a physio!

    You need to get it checked out. the likelyhood is that it is just a soft tissue injury and once the inflammation starts to subside you should indeed start gentle mobilsation with stretching and weightbearing excersises whilst continuing with the ice therapy. It does sound like one of the differential diagnoses could be tendonitis, or irritation of the tendon sheath.. possibly the attacment of semimembranosis, or the medial attachment of gastrocnemius, even a mild tear of the medial collateral ligament. Hopefully the medial menisci isnt involved.. any locking of the knee? or sudden pain that stops you in your tracks?
