Hi All, I am appealing to you all to assist in the location and hopeful recovery of my treasured Jones Spaceframe bike (Serial number JJ1110146). It was just recently custom built by Keep Pedalling in Manchester, a very unique ride certainly for here in Newcastle upon Tyne. Its distinct features make it stand out. Truss fork, Loop Bars, Chris King, Jones front hub, Hope Team green stem with black faceplate, Brooks C17, Thomson, Middleburn, Azonic…It was stolen from our apartment block on the 3rd floor on 27/10/16, lock snapped with bolt cutters. If you see it or hear on the grapevine of the bike being offered please let me know or contact the police.

It’s an odd bike to be targeted by thieves. I know they’re expensive but it takes a discerning thief to realise that. Which is worrying. Hope you get it back / insurance etc.

Someone broke into your flat and had cutters with them? That’s not a chance occurrence. Was anything else taken?

Was it stolen from your apartment or chained up in the communal 3rd floor lobby?

The bike was locked to the landing stair rail bollard just outside our flat alongside my girlfriends bike (vintage). That was untouched, the padlock was shattered with bolt cutters. The fact we have a lift made it easier than carrying down 3 stairwells. To say I’m gutted is an understatement! I have spread the word through the local cycling community and dealers given its such a specialist bike. Please feel free to cascade around your friends, other riders. I worked so hard to save for the Jones build for some low-life to steal it.

Pop this up on the Jones FB page, inc serial #. It’s too easily identified to stay lost for long, there aren’t that many around.

I’m in the west end so I’ll keep my eyes pealed and share the news around.
Bloody nightmare! I’dve been sleeping with the bike and had the girlfriend chained to the railing.

Can I ask what kind of lock they broke so I can put it on my avoid list.

You think that, but there’s a story of a Ti jones that appeared years later on here somewhere

^ that story was partly what I was thinking of, it took a while in that case but it was found. Few stolen bikes are, most get split up but it’s harder to do that with a Jones with odd fork and wheel spec.

Sorry to hear about the theft OP. I was wondering how they have gained access to get to the bike. Where I used to live, the entrance was on a timer so the postie could get in between 8 and 9, for example, otherwise they’d have to buzz each flat until someone let them in.

If you haven’t been followed home, then I’d suggest it’s either mates of someone living upstairs, or a tradesman who’s been working there recently. It’s not a huge stretch to imagine your upstairs neighbour sends photo of bike to dodgy mate, what’s this worth? Then lets them in to nick it when they know you’re not home.

Hope it gets back to you anyway, good luck.

I’m really sorry for you – that’s terrible.

I recommend you set up & save searches on ebay using all sorts of possible phrases and google alerts using the same phrases, setting up the google alert to send email immediately and any match.

You will then be alerted to anything that might be your bike when it’s listed anywhere google can get to, using within an hour or two of it appearing on the web.

I’ve been surprised how quickly google finds stuff and it covers loot, ebay, gumtree as well as all publicly accessible forums.

    Best of luck

    Sorry for your loss.
The chances of them selling it with out drawing attention are less than slim.
It might take a while but eventually it will resurface.
Chainline had his Ti spaceframe stolen and that turned up eventually so don’t lose hope.
Seems a stupid thing to steal as they would be almost impossible to sell without someone knowing it’s history.

I’ve sold both of the spaceframes I’ve owned but both times they’ve been bought by people that know me and the bikes history.

A quick search of ebay brought up your post

Good idea but if the scum bag who took it wanted to sell it on quickly do you think that seeing this would stop him showing his hand and maybe dumping it, or holding onto it until it’s gone quiet?

    Hi John,
It’s really difficult to pitch the approach to this as fortunately this hasn’t happened to me before. I want to be proactive rather than simply sit back. I totally appreciate your perspective. I thank everyone for the kind words and support, keep your eyes peeled.

Bummer! Leaving an expensive bike in a communal area, it was only going to be a matter of time though. Was here nowhere in the apartment to store it ?

I learned the stairwell railing lesson with an Edinburgh Bike coop special, and that was bad enough. Hope you get it back.

No CCTV footage anywhere? Sounds like someone who visits those flats clocked it, did a google and came back tooled up at a later date. Not an easy bike to shift inconspicuously so like others have said, hopefully will re-appear.

Im keeping an open mind Mal-ec, it makes you re-assess the environment you call home. I am heartened by the positive response from the general public and fellow riders. Spread the word (00)

It took me 3 years to reclaim my stolen Kona Humu back from a yocal using it on his commute. Not the same league of bike, but the sentiment remains, don’t give up.

**UPDATE** My Jones bike has been recovered today, albeit a little worse for wear and missing some Hope and Shimano items! It’s recovery did not involve the police but direct contact from a person who had apparently purchased it in good faith and after some online research realized it’s origins.
Posting on this site was the route of contact so I thank all those supporting messages and hope anyone who has recently had a bike stolen gets it back.
