made me giggle but surely it can be exempt from equal opportunities law?

    FEMALE PERSONAL ASSISTANT WANTED
Tues & Thurs 9pm – midnight. Permanent position. Immediate start. £9 p.h. Porthmadog Area. Extra hours can be negotiated. We are looking for a bubbly, patient female with a youthful outlook. Duties include personal care and aiding a physically disabled young man at bedtime. Experience preferable but not essential Interested?

it’s the ‘youthful outlook’ bit that made me laugh. if that doesn’t say ‘if you’re over 30, forget about applying I don’t know what does!

IIRC personal care is one of the few areas where you can specify the sex of the applicants.

Youthful outlook doesn’t suggest an age just an attitude.

Carefully written to stay inside the rules IMO and yes you can specify the sex of people in this situation but its usually used to specify same sex carers

Yes – but normally because you want the applicant to be the same sex as the client.

Yes, that does strike me as a little odd.

Just perhaps the chap in question doesnt want another chap to put him to bed, and to look after his personal needs, he perobably has his own budget off SS to pay for care how he sees fit.

I see no need for prurient comment; he has a physical disability and would prefer a female carer. What’s the big deal schoolboys?

Why does it specify bedtime though?

Anyway, what’s wrong with a job ad being sexy?

9pm till midnight, the chap can most probably look after himself the rest of the time, or he just doesnt have anyon eto look after him during those times.

Its common to take on carers for specific times and roles.

You would be right if it had said “Female carer wanted” but all that ‘bubbly youthful bedtime etc’ does rather leave it open to criticism!

Yes this, plus the fact that expoeriance isn’t important…

    Experience preferable but not essential

I read the paragraph and it immediately said ‘young girl to wash and dress my son’.

That tells me, as a man I shouldn’t apply.

I don’t know about sexist, but definitely comes across a bit pervy. You would have to need the money quite a lot. Might be worth asking what the overtime rate is ?? If they supply a uniform or any specialist tools or equipment ?? I imagine you might need a hoist, at the very least.

    What about ‘extras’?

Theres been more read into the advert than an Enid Blyton story book, he is physicaly disabled and just requires help with bed time, possibly undressing or use of a hoist.

    Simples.

None of which necessitates a female carer?

But you’re right, there could be a whole series of reasons for specifying this that we don’t know – e.g. maybe he’s had bad experiences with male carers in the past.

    Jeez..
He’s physically disabled, maybe he does want a female to help him at bedtime, maybe he’s just like the majority of young men, except he lives a rather crappier existence.

Sounds like some folk think he should never even think about sex, because he’s not normal…

    Avoiding age discrimination
Age discrimination is a relatively new addition to the list of things to consider when writing job adverts, and it is one of the biggest changes in process that most employers will have to go through in order to comply with all discrimination regulations.
The rules now not only cover stipulating upper or lower age limits for job applicants, but also implied terms such as ‘youthful’, ‘dynamic’ or ‘mature’. All these terms could be seen as excluding someone from applying for a role based on their age.

if it’s not sexist, it’s certainly ageist!

Perhaps he’s gay.. in which case a woman could be the ‘safe’ choice… from the parent’s point of view of course.
