Been thinking about getting a dog for a while and visiting the pup my folks are buying has put it to the forefront of my mind. However our circumstances will change in the next 6 months and could end up (anywhere) in London (or anywhere in the country tbh) so not really fair to buy a dog until we leave there in a couple years. Which is a shame as my gf works from home and I’ll be working weekends and nights next year I had hoped to get a dog to keep her company and look after her.

That said a few people had mentioned that some dogs are good in town and I wondered which? I can probably guess it’s none of the dogs I have been interested in – Vizsla, German short haired pointer, Finnish Spitz but I’m intrigued nontheless.

Dogs are pretty happy most places where their owners are, but the important thing will be whether they are going to fit in to their environment. Big, country-type dogs (gundogs etc) are going to want to run and play. Unless you have a big park nearby, street walking is going to be almost a bare minimum type of exercise for them.

Me personally, if I had been living in a town, I would have not bought a dog. Luckily I live in a village with a big field in front of my house and a load of woods nearby. That’s not to say that you can’t/should not buy a dog, but just think carefully about it.

I have a friend with a husky in Central London – spends a lot of time in Parks etc but is a very happy and friendly dog. It all about the time you invest I guess as with any dog.

Towns seem full of them, so they must be well suited.

Pugs. Smoosh-faced and with very low exercise requirements (still need a walk around the block once a day though), proper lap-dogs. Sounds ideal for your situation as your girlfriend works from home.

We live in the country and have always had big, runny type dogs, but if I lived in town I would be very tempted by either an english bulldog or dachshund. Both lovely dogs with bags of character.

Also, don’t rule out staffies, lots of lovely ones in rescue needing a home, just make sure it’s well socialised and be careful it’s not nicked by some scumbag!

Not sure why but staffies, pugs and bulldogs do nothing for me, couldn’t offer any reasonable explanation why not though.

Personally unless its a really active dog I think its less about the type of dog and more about how long and how often they are left on their own.

you need a mixed bag o dog– mongrels are better for many reasons– not inbred being the main one !

Vizslas are nice family dogs. Noisy sods though. Howl/whine a lot (although it doesn’t mean they’re unhappy, like it would with many dogs).

If no ugly ones allowed, then has to be a whippet!

My current battersea special isn’t too runny, just very windy.
