Just before I hit 'Buy' on a poverty spec Kindle, is there anything better/cheeper out there.

Is there a better alternative to a Kindle?

I bought one yesterday for Mrs BigJohn's birthday. I notice that it doesn't come with a charger. What sort of charger do I need? Is it a USB style one (of which I have loads) or do I need to spend a fortune elsewhere?

Any USB type one, assuming you're talking about the type of model where you can swap the cables.

We have a couple of Kindles in the house - keyboard version and the newer, smaller version. As Caher says, it's much easier on the eye than a backlit screen like the iPad, and much lighter as well. I'm thinking about selling the keyboard version (with Amazon case) if you're interested.
The only criticism I ever hear of them is that they're tied to Amazon by DRM, but given that I've bought nearly all my 'real' books from Amazon for years anyway, that didn't feel like much of an issue. In any event, it's an issue that can be easily resolved by any reasonably computer literate person via a copy of Calibre, which allows you to import and export books in various formats.

I thought they'd resolved that by making the screensavers adverts on the cheep (subsidised) ones?
So if I download a book from anywhere other thank amazon will it work?

I tried to download Paul Gadd's biography, but I couldn't because it was a pdf file.

I have a Kobo, as it does epub files, works as well as a kindle imo.

Assuming the Kindle, it's micro-USB. Surprised it didn't come with one though, both of ours did.

There's ways round that.
EDIT - ah, as you said. Ignore me.

You can always convert it.

If you buy one this week from a Tesco store you get a £5 voucher off your next shop (for spending over £40.

The one I bought my wife this christmas came with the cable but no plug-in charger. Given the number of USB chargers I have kicking about it wasn't a problem!

And to the OP: not tried other readers, but the Kindle is superb, and beautifully integrated with Amazon's oh-so-easy-to-use online store. Dangerously well integrated, in face

Ah yes, good point; so did mine. As you say though, it's hardly a case of "where on earth am I going to find a USB socket?"

Just ordered one and a hemp case, so if it isn't as good as expected I can allways smoke it!
