  • Interval training on a spinning bike – questions?

    Morning everybody,

I’ve recently got hold of a spinning bike for the house and have started doing some riding on it. Finiding it pretty hard work really. I’m not doing any silly spinning class style standing up and wiggling stuff, just pedalling and trying to do some intervals.

What I am a bit stuck on is how long I should spend on the interval and how long I should recover for. I started trying to do a minute on/minute off but failed to keep that up for very long at all. Dropped that to 30 seconds on/minute off which was more achievable but not sure whether that is too short or not.

Has anyone got any advice or tips to help out? I’ve tried googling but generally just come up with dubious routines and dodgy info.

does the bike have a cadence display?

    Unfortunately not, no.

I’ve got an HRM but no cadence measure.

Google ‘tabata protocol’. And get the sick bucket ready 😉

EDIT: just tried that and the first few link are nonsense, so just read this:

Cheers Finbar, that looks good and certainly gives me something to work at.

Matthew – I have a Spin bike for indoor training and found this site useful. There are downloadable AVI’s on the site which have various cycling race videos with a soundtrack and on-screen prompts for interval training. Helps to reduce the boredome factor for me.

    David.
