    Why laugh at the ordinary? It was a very clever way of introducing a type of gearing before roller chain and sproksts were invented. As there was only direct drive available by making your driving wheel big you gained multiplication gearing.

    That why old bikies talk gear Inches as opposed to gear ratios. In that why a geared chain drive bike could be compared directly to the size of an ordinary’s drive wheel.
