….it see the torch if I shone it into the sky at night ?

I’m not thinking of getting stranded on a desert island but just asking just incase !

Torch would be a mega bright one

You’d have to shine it almost directly at the pilot and/or hope for some light scattering through through a hazy atmosphere.

    And the word is “shone”

I think they used big bright torches to illuminate German bombers over London in WWII.

Would the torches have laser guided rockets?? What exactly are you planning?

Lost on a conveyor belt? Things really are looking bleak!

Is the desert on a conveyor belt one way, and the plane the other way?

If it was misty, or if you lit a huge smokey fire, the beam would stand out more.

    Is it cloudy?
A modern LED flashlight, outputting maybe 500-1000Ln, ought to be visible against an otherwise completely dark background, especially if it’s set on SOS or strobe, particularly strobe, as it would be something out of the ordinary which would catch the eye.
Of course, altitude of the plane may make a difference, at 35,000ft a plane may well be too high, but from 10,000ft, it should be visible to an SAR plane.
It’s why emergency strobes are carried.
‘Course, you need charged batteries… 😉

You need to sellotape a bat to the front of the torch too.

Was reading one of those “aint the human body amazing” things yesterday and with regards to the eye “On a dark night, you could even see a candle flame flickering up to 30 mile away”

    http://www.livescience.com/33895-human-eye.html”

So my answer would be yes.. probably…

Only if your eyes were fully adjusted. If you are flying a plane though your eyes are having instruments and lights shone in them all the time.

This could be calculated if you know the spread of the beam and how sensitive the eye can be. However I’ve not found any information on how many mCd can be perceived.
