For an insurance valuation do I add up the sum of the parts to buy new and use that as the value?

    Yep.
Though if it’s been nicked and you are making a claim, then you probably need to go to your LBS and get them to do a valuation on their headed paper.

Depends on what you policy wording is..

Yes, RRP on every piece (especially as prices are rising just now) so you can replace it like for like if it goes walkies

price of bike in parts plus any known extras the insurance company will lop off ‘for good measure’.

how much are people paying for insurance? is it the same as a car and goes on the value of the bike itself?

I think bikes up to £500 are covered on our standard contents insurance and up to £1500 are covered if listed separately. No idea what we pay though.

Sh!t – I’ve just realised how much my back-up/winter bike is worth. Best not tell the wife or I’ll be in serious trouble.

I just phoned up Direct line and they won’t insure bikes worth more than £1000 as part of Home contents. Who’s best for specialist bike insurance?

direct line will insure over £1000 – they just try to avoid it…

they were very very very helpful with me – and said any proof of value would do, wheras most insurers count the age of the frame (importantly – just the frame) and take depreciation from that age…it stuffed me with most of them for my ’93 dyna tech with all new parts on it!!!

direct line were excellent – thoroughly reccomended!

I’ve got 4 bikes (road bike, hard tail, FS and wifeys) two of which are over £1000, 2 are under. How nicely do you have to talk to them to insure all of them? Do you need to threaten to cancel your policy?

Talk to M&S. I have 5 bikes, 1 a few hundred, one about a grand, and 3 over £2k. Unless it’s over £4k, it’s covered without questions. (not that i’ve had to test this theory yet…)
