I’ve got a new bike with x12 bolt thru hub, my old bikes got decent wheel set, but the rear’s old school qr, according to the dt swiss website their hubs are convertible, but I bought the hub second hand so not sure how old it is, although it’s centre lock disc mount, so not ancient, I’m guessing I might have to take it to the lbs to find out, but any of the enlightened ones out there can cheer me up? I can’t see anything that obviously indicates it is convertible.

You will need to pull the old end caps off, soft jaws in a vice should do it and just push the new ends on. Where are you based, I might have a spare pair hanging around.

That looks like it ambrose, cheers mate, I nearly splashed out a new hub today, you may just have saved me £150!!!

I believe the rears are pretty straightforward, all the same internals and where there’s been changes they’re still compatible. You might need the kit with the newer axle, as older ones were 10mm internal diameter.

(now front DT240S- fronts are confusing)

If you’ve got a photo of the hub (sounds the same as mine) then I may be up for a end cap swap. Mine is currently 142×12 but the hub is going to be pressed into service on a bike with regular 135mm QR dropouts very soon…

If,as you say the hub is an older one then you need the X12 kit that comes with a replacement axle. The older DT240s came with an axle that narrowed in the middle and the X12 axle won’t fit.
The kit is a bit more expensive and a bit more of a hassle to fit as you have to pop a bearing out to replace the axle. Still no more than an hour to do though…

Just pop an end cap off first and see if your x12 axle will slide through. If it does you just need the end caps, if it doesn’t you need the larger axle too. I might even have an old axle at the bottom of the tool box. (well I definitely have one just not sure if it is the x12 compatible one.)
