Looking at getting Hope V2 front and back brakes with the V2 183 floating rotors for my 5" trail bike. Anyone else run these on a non free ride/ downhill bike and do they feel like over kill? I will be replacing hoses with my existing hope non braided hoses so the weight gain will be purely down to the extra weight in the rotors. These will be replacing my Hope tech X2 brakes.

I've got V2's with 203 vented rotors on one bike* and I can overheat them on long descents.
*Not a free ride/downhill bike.

Superb brakes, only brakes that I've had zero problems with in the Alps - the weight difference over Mono M4s is almost nothing.

I have them on a burly trail / AM bike. I prefer these to M4's, they have more bite and still adequate modulation so that I can easily control them in very slippery conditions. The brake lever / caliper combo is actually a touch lighter then the M4 if both have braided hoses, but the rotors are a bit heavier which means you do lose a bit over M4's (but nothing meaningful).

I'm 90kg butt-naked and a bike guide, so carrying a big, heavy pack all the time. I guide full time in the Alps and I've never come close to overheating my V2s - and that's on normal (floating) rotors.

I had some on my DH bike. They were nice & reliable, but a bit like boat anchors in terms of weight.
I wouldn't be wanting to run them on my trail bike. Massive overkill.
Chuck a set of Formula The One's on there, or some of the new XTR Trail brakes.

Cheers for all the feedback, nice and positive about these brakes. I'm not going to consider anything other than hope brakes as thats what I like so its really between the M4 or the V2's and I don't think the weight will be noticeable, If it is I will bring out the foam grips!

Ah, OK - that might do it!
In fairness they cope a lot better than anything else we've tried and they never actualy boil up. I think the pads just get that hot they don't grip the rotor very well.

I run V2s on my DH bike and M4s on my 140mm bike. I had Tech X2s originally on the 140mm bike but I found them underpowered and 2 callipers fractured so I changed the callipers to tech M4s. Since then the brakes have been extremely reliable and they just work. I would have gone for V2 callipers for simplicity (single piston) over M4s but they wouldn't work with the X2 rotors so M4s it was. I use 183mm rotors F & R and they are very powerful (when setup correctly)and even after +3500' continuous descents they have never overheated and the pads seem to last ages. As for weight who cares about +/- 100g if the brakes are reliable and powerful?
Maybe V2s with 183mm rotors for a 5" bike would be good?

Took a 5 with 203 v2s to Europe this summer, never missed a beat, even 50+KM of DH at Pila in boiling hot weather. And I am a big fatty.

I have the V2s on my Cove STD and never managed to overheat either at Ft Bill or in the Alps on quite a few trips. Mine are not the "vented" versions either. They are very strong brakes.

well.... i'm a tad over the 100kgs mark (by quite a few more than i care to divulge) and they are the only brake i've not fried/overheated/popped. They are like the preverbial anchor out the back.

Running non vented 203 front and 185 rear on a Five. Superb brake, loads of power but loads of feel too. Find em spot on for the UK.
Run vented discs for the Alps. Never had any overheating issues and I'm 100kg and drag my brakes a lot!

I've only ever run Hope pads. Both sintered and organic. No complaints. Seem to less ages, even in the Alps, as you don't need to apply much brake pressure due to the awesome stopping power.
So impressed with my Moto V2s I picked up another set of Tech V2s 2 weeks ago for my BFe.

Well got my new Hope Tech Evo V2 brakes the other day, fitted and have tried them out and they are amazing brakes, oodles of power when required but with fantastic feel and modulation I just wish I had go these ages ago. Weighed them as well as switched out the hose to run with my already existing hope normal hose and the total weight gain per end over my X2's is 47g per brake including the difference in rotor weight (the callipers are only 14g heavier than the X2's!) Begs the question why their is a need for the X2 brake or even the M4's. My thoughts would be to just produce these V2's with smaller rotors if people wished.

Is there a reason they don't make a 160 rear rotor for these? Is there room for the caliper? If so, has anyone considered getting a rotor special order? Tempted by a set but I still run 5 bolt hubs so rotors would have to be specials anyway.

I know the hope trials rotors fit, so if they did a 160 in these then its happy days. They have their own dedicated floating rotor as the track has to be quite large/deep due to the size of the pistons/pads as they would catch on the normal rotors. Hope probably don't make a 160 rotor for these as they consider them downhill brakes and at first they only made the 203 rotors for them. You could use any brand rotor with a deep braking surface/track.

You can actually use the X2 pads in them & use any rotor full stop.

I had V2's and needed the same adapters to fit a 180 disc as my new brakes needed to fit a 160... so I think running a 160 is not possible (but I could be wrong).

That's good to hear Radioman. Just bought one of these frames and have been deliberating on which brakes to get (have tech m4/x2's on my other bikes)!

nickf - Even the ancient 2-piece M4s + 205mm rotors are vastly overkill for my wife, as she's very close to 55kgs!
