On back pedalling it sticks and if it does wind back it makes a reet noise. See video. Is it the pawls or something?

sounds like it’s dry inside , pull the freehub to bits and give everything a light coat of grease.

freehub full of grit or a spacer issue.

Probably just needs a service, but if it’s an older XC hub, the axle might have snapped. Hope will provide replacement axles for free though.

be careful pulling freehub off – contains bits that go ‘ping’.

In my case it was be careful when pulling cassette off as it brought the freehub with it 🙁

I cleaned and regreased it 2 rides ago after some weird slipping feeling, so it’s got plenty of grease.

too much grease, or too thick ?

    My guess is either

    1) you didn’t put it back together ‘right’ (either when replacing pawls or last time bearigns were changed).
    or
    2) the pawls/springs are knackered.

I did pack in lots of grease in an attempt to quieten it a touch. Looks like another strip down is in order.

    weird slipping feeling

wot wwaw said – sounds like freehub starting to fail (were springs OK?) and now maybe too much grease or missing something in reassembly as well

I just snapped and axle in one, it only lasted 8 years in Wales.

Not free they don’t. not any more.

sounds like the freehub gubbins are incorrectly located. Take it apart, get rid of most of the grease and put it together carefully, trying not to dislodge any pawls or springs.

Difficult to tell as it’s mostly out of shot, but I think Gavgas has it.

Worn free hub and pawls. Send back to hope for a rebuild if its an XC or buy new hub.

The end seals can cause this problem…take them off…GT85 them…put them back

And the winner is…whoever it was that said the jockey wheel was borked. I didn’t expect that as the mech is relatively new and I ran my previous SRAM mech for more than 3 years without issues.
