CRC have road HollowTech II BB from a little as 12 quid and I wondered if these would fit my Hone Hollow Tech II chainset on my bike. At that price I am not overly worried if the road seals aren't as good as the MTB ones (I expect they are the same) but wondered if the axle length / width was any different?

I thught the shell was a bit narrower on the road BB's?
the road cups are a tad narrower, AFAIK. It's only by a few mm though so shouldn't make much difference in practical terms.
it might if you run out of spline trying to tighten the crank arm up?
The only thing that concerns me is that on a MTB BB HT II BB they are designed for 68/73mm shells. The cranks have an axle designed for a 73mm shell and you space out the cups on a 68mm BB.
The road ones are designed for 68mm only by the looks of it so would there be enough thread screwed into the frame after I have used the spacers for a 68mm BB?
My personal view is that you'll save yourself time and money in the long run if you just use something that was designed to do the job in the first place.
You coould spend hours and £'s fretting and bodging only to end up with something that's not quite right.
I couldn't swap them around when I tried.
Not worth the hassle IMHO.

I bought a road BB (not shimano) a while back, all fitted etc but the cups were not up to the job. Separated them at the end of the threads in about 2 weeks. They looked a lot thinner
Just replace the bearings in your existing HT11 BB?
Having swapped the BB around now on a few bikes the cups are tatty and this time around I am just going to replace the whole thing.
I think I will just get a standard MTB one, dare I say it, even a superstar one - 
If the general answer was yeah go ahead then I would but as it isn't I won't bother with the hassle.
