Is it too flat/too hilly or would it be ok?

Im doing it on my single speed. The main HTN race in the summer was great on a SS too.

    Mini thread revival

    What gearing are people considering?

I need to know if my SS cross bike is horribly overgeared….

Panic not, kids, I’ve found an old post about this.

Terra’s suggestion is that 34×16 on MTB (55 inches) would be good.

So, I’ll pitch in with 40×20 on CX (54 inches) and be grateful I ca still walk the next day…!

Ok but just to throw a spanner in the works I used 32 x 16 on the mtb when I did it but I only just ground up a couple of the climbs. I am not generally shy of hills either, btw.

There are several things to consider other than gearing.

How fast can you run with it?

    Can you swim?

    Are you afraid of bulls?

    Mr Sparkle.

That’s interesting to know. I might order a 39t chainring, too. 39×20 (52.7 inches on 700c) is as low as I can gear down – 32×16 on MTB is 51.9 inches.

I’ll have to get there early and see what’s best. Then I’ll have to man up.

I wouldn’t get too obsessed over it, fella. I’m sure it’ll be reet. Just enjoy the race.

HtS – Bulls cause me no fear. Unless, that is, you’re planning on making the start like the Pamplona bull run….

I can’t really run, so I’m going to use the bike like a farmer’s gate, and lean on it chewing a piece of straw while issuing sheepdog trial commands.

I’m just Commander of Marshals now, Terrahawk is overall ruler… But a bull run does sound like an excellent idea.

Joking aside, there are some carrying sections.

I’m doing it on my 456 rigid’d singlespeed – 32:16 gearing. If it gets steep I’ll pedal harder till I can’t pedal any more then I’ll push… not really too fussed on the gearing, just hope my brakes stop rubbing by then! Really looking forward to it. Hope it’s muddy 🙂

I’d hope so – it’s a race involving cross bikes.

37:16 gets quite hard. Don’t try to race with that.

Don’t worry Terra – we know just how human we are and how inhuman the course design is bound to be!

can I just add that the entry closes on Monday 7th (a week from now) providing there are places left by then – if you’re quick you might get an entry.
Looking at record numbers for the winter event this time. It’s not that ‘little’ any more 🙂

I will be riding round sans camera, ‘racing’ might be stretching it a bit. 😀

    Ace.

I’m wondering whether those of us who’ve taken part in each HtN shouldn’t form a veterans organisation or somesuch.

Why not? There will be a vet’s pi55 up in The Church Inn afterwards.

Is Will going to film it?

I’m afraid not. He’s working that day.

I’m hoping to borrow a helmet cam and stick it on Phil’s head for a lap. I expect it will be a fast and exciting lap as long as he can go for a lap without getting a puncture 😉

but yeah, a vets organisation sounds like a great idea.

    like the british legion???

mud, suffering, verbal abuse, HtN sounds like trench warfare – but last winter we had a digeridoo so that jollied things along

You need a tyre that can cope with mud, gravel, stone, a stream, grass, tarmac, steps, roots, cow shit and ice.

    Harry_the_Spider

oh… and some raised decking type stuff too.

    terrahawk

    tyres? depends on the weather.
But then, as has been pointed out, the course is quite varied. Some of it can be quite muddy but then there are parts that are hardpacked swoopy berms and that.

We’re not helping are we. bring all of them.

I think I ran 32:17 on my 26″ SS at the last short one (1.5v2?).

At HTN2 I was on 32:18 on a 29″ SS. That was only my 7th ride of the year though; I might have geared up if I’d ridden a bit more 😉

Don’t think my cx pro’s will be upto much

Both the prev Winter Spriners I’ve ridden on 26″ CX Pros.

I’ve got 700c CX Pros on my SSCX bike. It’s those or small block 8s. Which is really CX Pros or nothing.

The course has all sorts of terrain and surfacing in it. It’s bound to be lumpy, boggy, grippy and fast all in different places and with a whole lot of suffering.

I’m going to be crap, but I can’t wait.

Anyroad, it’s not gearing/tyres you need to be worrying about. Its brakes… 😀

Bulls…… I’d better not bring a reb bike.

    Do bulls chase blue bikes?

We’ve been showing the bulls your picture then shooting them in the knackers with a .22.
