    Some people don't have much choice. A friend of my brother lives in Denver, Co. The police's attitude is that they can no longer 'Protect & Serve', at least as far as the 'protect' part, anyway. He owns an H&K .44 auto pistol, an AK47, and several other semi-auto rifles. He's a rocket scientist. That's just the sort of thing he'd have, the police say that if you have an armed intruder, shoot to kill, to avoid the inevitable litigation.
